As racing began to advance and improve over the years, the original track of paving bricks was soon covered with asphalt. All that remains of the old brick track is a 36-inch strip at the start/finish line. A tradition that all of the winners of the Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400 partake in is the kissing of the bricks. Nascar champion Dale Jarrett first started this tradition in 1996 after winning the Brickyard 400. This tradition pays tribute to the fabled history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
