The construction of the Old Capitol building in Iowa City started on July 4, 1840, and was completed in 1842. It was the main government building for Iowa until. The building held many assemblies until 1857 when the state capitol was relocated to Des Moines. On November 20, 2001, The building had a fire which caused damage to the building and its furniture and many more items. Today it is in better condition and you can go inside it to look around and read about the building.
