This week, authorities found the dead bodies of hikers Rachel Nguyen and Joseph Orbeso in Joshua Tree National Park. The couple had been declared missing three months ago when they failed to check out of their bed-and-breakfast room. Authorities searched for a couple days after the couple was reported missing, but after more than 10 people suffered injuries from the search, they decided to stop. A team of volunteers including Orbeso’s father continued to search the park every weekend until they found them. Searchers found the missing couple both shot dead while locked in an embrace in a very remote area of the Joshua Tree National Park. Officials found a gun near the bodies and believe that Orbeso had shot Nguyen and then himself after they ran out of food and water. Authorities also determined that Orbeso had no plans of harming Nguyen before they left. Investigators say that the hikers could have thought that killing themselves was the only way out.
Questions:
If you were in lost in a national park, what would you do?
Why do you think that Orbeso shot Nguyen and then himself?
Answers:
The first thing I would do if I was lost in a national park would be to try to find things to spell out “help” or something on the ground so people might find me who are searching from above, or try to make a fire so people would see the smoke and hopefully find me. I would also try to find some food and water so I could continue to survive until I was found.
I think that Orbeso shot Nguyen and himself because they were lost and out of resources and they just gave up. They also could have thought that killing themselves quickly with the gun was better than slowly dying from starvation and dehydration.

Great job Abby!
I would call a sign for help, find food, find water, and try and remember my steps. I think that if you shoot yourself youve given up and cant take it anymore, and never think your getting out.
I do think that the couple gave up a little early. Even thought they were really lost, I think that they could have tried a lot more things in an attempt to be rescued before they gave up and shot themselves.
I think that i would have kept a way to signal someone or would have marked a path so that i wouldn't get lost in the first place, in the event i got lost i would signal for help or would attempt to retrace my steps to a place i recognized. I would not have given up because taking your life is a terrible thing to do that effects everyone around you not just you.
I think that after orbeso realized the danger they were in they gave up and decided to go faster than starvation would take them. I think that once he thought that there was no way out her became tunnel visioned and killed both him and Rachel because he didn't want to suffer any longer.
I agree, if they thought that there was no other way out of the situation, then they might have gotten tunnel vision and couldn't think of any other ways to save themselves.
I would try to get help first before making the decision to end my life...I would walk with my partner for as long as it would take. I think that by dying, they wouldn't have to suffer from dehydration or other problems. Why would they bring a gun though? It doesn't really make any sense...Were they hunting? I feel like their is more to the story.
I'm not sure why they brought a gun in the first place because the authorities said that Orbeso had no plans of harming himself or Nguyen before they left for the trip, and it really doesn't make sense.
I would try to find as much as food as I possibly could. First, I would try to find shelter or a good place to stay and try to use anything as a resource. I would make a fire out of sticks to keep warm and hope someone would see it. I think Orbeso shot Nguyen because they were out of food and water so he didn't want Nguyen to suffer so ended her life.
I agree, I think that Orbeso shot the two of them not only so he didn't have to suffer through a long death from dehydration, but so his girlfriend didn't have to suffer either. He probably was just trying to do what he thought was best.
For me, I would've brought neon tape/ribbons. Why? To tape/tie them around a tree every so many yards. I then have the ability to know where I was before and where I wasn't. I think he did it because he didn't feel like he could make it. So he decided to die and kill his significant other. On the other hand, the authorities had never been in side the man's brain. They couldn't know if he was actually planning a homicide or not.
