Trump Says 'America Isn't So Innocent After All'

Trump is trying to better relations between the U.S. and Russia. Over the weekend, Trump was dismissing comments on Fox News calling Vladimir Putin a "killer". On Saturday, Fox News released excerpts from an interview, hosted by Bill O'Reilly, with Trump. When asked why he was being so respectful of Putin and after Bill O'Reilly said "he's a killer," Trump then responded, "There's a lot of killers. What, do you think our country's so innocent?" Trump's relations with Russia and Putin have been under watch by the media. The deputy editorial page editor of The Wall Street Journal, Bret Stephens, tweeted, "Trump puts US on moral par with Putin's Russia. Never in history has a President slandered his country like this.” The President also said in the interview that he isn't for sure whether he will like Putin or not, but Russian assistance with fighting against radical Islamic terrorism would be valuable.

Questions:

1. What do you think about Trumps comment about the U.S. not being so innocent? Do you agree? Why or why not?

2. Do you think that the U.S. should move further into building relations with Russia? Why or Why not?

My Answer:

I believe that Trump has a point. The U.S has the worlds greatest intelligence agency, the CIA, specifically to keep tabs on whats going on around the world in other countries. No country can rise to the top without "stepping on someone else's shoes." I believe that at least trying to keep things cooled down with Russia is pretty important. Relations between the United States and Russia have been rocky or the last 50 or 60 years and we are both the world's major super powers that are in possession or nuclear weapons. It wouldn't hurt to at least be on somewhat good terms.

  • Great summary but this story had already been done. Be sure to check over the forum before picking a story. You also didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 20 points. -5 late.

  • I think we should become closer with Russia because we are both very large pieces of the world. If we are combined forces then it would be much easier if there was a war. I agree that the U.S. is not innocent. We have done some bad things to get where we are because in order to move forward you have to change things.

  • I don't think any nation is completely innocent. We've had to make difficult decisions as a country, so I agree that we aren't an innocent country. I think an alliance with Russia would be beneficial. It would be good to restablish a good relationship with Russia.

  • I agree with Trump when he said that the United States isn't innocent.  For example, both of the presidential candidates of the 2016 election were investigated at some point in their lives.  Our leaders and their actions aren't innocent (for example, bombing, murders, immigration bans), but the things they do need to be done.  I think that the United States should move further into building relations with Russia because we need all the help we can get in fighting and trying to defeat radical Islamic terror.

  • The US is not innocent by any means. Yes the US should restore relations with Russia. better to have them as an ally then an enemy

  • Well if you think back to wars we have killed people and the atomic bomb killed innocent people so I guess it could  be true. I think that building alliances is important because fighting against Islamic terrorists is super important.

  • i do agree that the US is not innocent. we have drug lords crime lords. and a problem with murder. people think that the justus system is corrupt when they fail to see that the person that the cop shot in most times was attacking the cop. yes we should because russia is a major power and together the US and Russia could stop any terrorist or threat.

  • I agree that Trump has a point there. Since the beginning of our history, we've taken land from other people for our own personal gain, and in the process, some men have done many other things that we shouldn't be proud of (pillaging, rape, murder, etc). Although you could argue that it's best for everyone in the long run, the means were anything but noble. I believe that since Russia is one of the other major superpowers of the world, they would make a valuable ally in an ongoing fight against terrorism, so we should move further with our alliance with them.

  • I do not agree because we are innocent, we might make mistacks but we apologize for them and we realize that we did something wrong. We should continue to build relations with putin but not be buddys with him.

  • I think Trump has a good point because America does know a lot about every country and their leaders. I think it is important that we are on good terms with Russia I don't think we need to be best friends with them but the world would be better knowing two of the strongest countries are at peace.
