Should you trust Wikipedia?

Wikipedia is a well-known source to most. Wikipedia is an online source that is written and maintained by a group of volunteers. Typically, it is one of the first sites that comes up in your search engine. This has been a hot topic for a long time. Many say wikipedia is unreliable and not trustworthy, others say it is an okay website to use. How do we know if wikipedia is reliable if the writers are volunteers?

Wikipedia has run into some problems in the past that have put a dent in their reputation. There was an American journalist who was reading his online biography done by wikipedia, and he was listed as a conspirator in two assassinations regarding John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. They could not identify the writer of this biography because the only information they have about these writers is their computer IP address. Later on, the writer laughed it off and apologized saying he wrote it as a joke.

In my opinion, I think wikipedia can be reliable sometimes but I wouldn’t typically choose a wikipedia link. I would rather find a more reliable source when getting my information. I think wikipedia has fooled too many people too many times since its upbringing. If I absolutely need to use wikipedia, I would make sure the given information is correct before using it further within my project/paper/assignment.

Do you use wikipedia?

Do you think wikipedia should be considered a reliable source?

Do you think wikipedia is trustworthy?

  • Ecellent topic choice and super job overall Lydia! #1!!!

  • I do not use wikipedia because I don't think it is a reliable sorce. My english teachers always said not to us wikikpedia because people can change the information easily. Now if you get the same information from another sorce that is more reliable I would personally just stay on that sorce.

  • i think wikipedia can be a helpful starting point for gathering information, but its important to verify yhe information from other reliable sources as well.

  • I personally do not use wiki pedia, because I do not think it is a reliable or credible source. I think this because english teachers always used to say, "never get your information from wikipedia," when writing research papers. I personally do not think it is a trustworthy site.

  • I don't use wikipedia because I don't think it is a reliable source because I'm always told by teachers not to use it. It might be a trustworthy source but I just prefer to use another source.

  • I just Wikipedia a lot and I think it's very useful but sometimes it can be not a great source because people can make edits to Wikipedia so then there could be some long information in the Wikipedia website. I also think Wikipedia is a very choice for the site but there is some complications.

  • I dont personly use wikipedia and usally try to stay away from it. Becuase it has people that can just change and make things up that arent true. and people will use that for like a reserch project and its not correct so they get in trouble.

  • I use wikipedia when I search random things during the day for a quick simple answer, but I wouldn't use it for any school related thing. I don't think it should be considered a reliable source because it is so easy to go in and change things on the website, so no I don't think wikipedia is trustworthy.

  • I think Wikipedia is a good place to start when researching but you probably shouldn't just rely on the infomation to be correct. You should go to other websites to double check. I don't think Wikipedia is always trustworthy because anyone can change whats on the website.

    • I agree, it isn't a good main source but it's good for checking if information is right.
