Should Students have an after school job?

Nearly 30% of high school students have been employed to a part time job during a portion of the school year. Most high school students work at local stores or restaurants in their town or towns near them. Some students even use knowledge from school in their job like a cna. The average paycheck for a part time student working is roughly $200 a week.

Having a job in highschool is a positive thing because it can teach students the Value or money. As well as having a good sense of what to do with your money it will teach you how to budget it too. Students will learn what needs and wants are. Getting a part time job after school can help you save up for college or your plans for the future. This can also help you with time management and help you create your own schedule. While there is a lot of pros there are also a lot of cons. Such as it can distract you or keep you from having the time you need to study. This can be a huge problem for some kids who aren't able to keep up during a regular school day or are in harder classes that require a lot more suddying. Next research has found that most jobs that are held by high school students do not teach skills that can lead to any kind of career advancement. Lastly, it can take away from your personal time or free time that could be spent with family or friends.

I believe that students should should get an after school job. I have one and I believe that it does not take away time from my family and my academics. Having a job in high school can help you learn skills you can use later in life or in college. I have learned a lot of life skills in my high school job that I can carry on to my future career. Such as driving semis, fixing semis, and even how to use acids. I believe that if you get and after school job you will know what to expect from a boss or even coworkers.

Overall I believe that students should have jobs in highschool because it will give them work experience they can use later in life and it can teach students the value of money and hard work. Even though some may say that it will take away from school work or family time. There is always certain jobs that will allow you to have free time or allow you to take time off if the need arises.

  • Great topic choice and summary Brett! The issue is you didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 30 points.

  • I think people would enjoy the value of money but learning about it is another story people dont really like learning about it but just like having it or saving it up for a cool car like a 69 charger but if that were the case there would be many more money resposible people in the world and I think people knowing the value of money is a good thing because people dont know how to save money like me I buy unnecessary things.

  • I think after school jobs would help teach kids the values of saving money and saving up for what they want like a car or parts for one, jobs will teach the value of money to some just open a bank or savings account and store it in one of them until the point you found something you really want and will not regret, if i were put in that situation I would get a job for afterschool

  • as it may take away from spending valued time from your relatives I think it would be a choice depending on the person if someone wants to have a job they can get a job if they want but if they dont they dont have tooand as though I dont have a job I will get one in the future but I cant right now because of sports and that is another thing sports will cancel peoples planes to have a job, but if that were me I would highly concider it.

  • I think its up to the student if they want to have a highschool job or not. It just depends what activities they are in, with practices and games and clubs. A job after school can become too much and can definitely take away from family time. So maybe for a busy student, a after school job might not be the best for them. Though for a student that really isnt in activites and just wants money, obviously a after school job is perfect for them.

  • I do believe having a job can take away lots a family time. This could really go into conflict if you are also in multiple sports. I think having a job can have many pros and cons. Family time is really important, you could maybe try to work a schedule out so you can fit family time in.

  • I think students should have jobs in highschool. This will help a lot to prepare them for their future life. Having a job will help them understand how important money is and will show them the true meaning of money.

  • Yes, I do belive that students should have an after school. Like you said there are many pros and only a few cons. Jobs can take away from family and school time, but that can teach the students good time mangament skills. You also will be getting money to save for college or anything else that you want.

    • I agree with you, having a job will help you be prepared for college and just your future life. I also belive that there are many pros and cons of this.

  • I agree when you said there are a lot of pros and also a lot of cons of having an after school job. There are good things like having a flexible schedule, making some extra cash, and having something to keep yourself busy. But there are also other cons like missing out on friend gatherings.
