Sign language is a language that uses hand motions and facial expressions. This language is used to help people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or people that are unable to speak, communicate with everyone around them. Sign language can be very beneficial because it can help promote inclusion and communication with everyone. Over 70 million people in the world use sign language. In the nation, there are over 1,000 schools that teach American sign language. Harlan Community is not one of those schools.
American Sign Language (ASL) can be beneficial because it helps provide a way to communicate with others who cannot speak or hear. Most people who use sign language are deaf, hard of hearing, cannot speak English very well, have a disability, or other reasons. Without sign language, these people have to find different ways to communicate with others. American Sign Language helps promote equality for everyone. ASL gives people who are unable to speak or hear, an opportunity to live an equal life.
Students who learn sign language can communicate with those around them that are unable to communicate through speech. Learning ASL helps with inclusion throughout schools. Just like Spanish and French (which are foreign languages that Harlan provides), ASL provides another way to share their thoughts, it can also be used as a second language that you can use for colleges/universities. Some schools that accept sign language as a foreign language are The University of Iowa, Yale University, Florida State University, Baylor University, and many more. If students learn sign language, they are helping their future selves as well as the community. If you learn ASL, you might have a higher chance of getting a job because you know sign language and can communicate with others.
In my opinion, I think that having the option of taking an American sign language class would be very good. Learning ASL could potentially benefit me in the future, if I have a family member that needs to use ASL, or I know someone or work with someone that uses it. Learning sign language can benefit you and others around you in many ways. I think that many people should learn ASL because it helps include everyone.

Have you ever wanted to learn ASL?
Would you take an ASL class if Harlan offered it?
Do you think that it is important for students to have the opportunity to learn ASL?

I've always wanted to learn sign language, but I never knew where to start. I think most people overlook sign language. I think I would give ASL class a try, I would like to try and learn some of it. I think it's important to learn it, because many people are deaf or mute.
I agree with you, I think that having an ASL class would give people the oppurtunity to learn ASL if they have ever wanted to learn it and not had the chance or know how to start.
Yes, I used to want to learn ASL when I was younger because my aunt works at a deaf school and they use asl. Yes, I would deffinetly consider taking an ASL class if Harlan offered it. Yes, I think it's important to have the opportunity for students to learn ASL.
If this class was offerd I don't think I would do it but I think it is a good life lesson to learn. For example, if you go out in public you could want to learn ASL for different situations. Although I wouldn't take the class, it would be a good thing to be able to learn.
I agree, although not everyone would want to learn ASL, it is like Spanish or French, where you can choose to learn the language if you think that it could be beneficial to your future, or you want to learn it for fun.
I haven't really had any interest in learning sign language, but i think it is cool. I probably wouldn't take an ASL class if our school ever offered it because I am more interested in taking college classes so I don't have to take some of them in college.
I think it would be good to offer the class, but I also think that very few people would sign up for it. Maybe if it was just a semester were you learn the ASL alphabet the class could work. I probably wouldn't take the class because I am already taking Spanish and 2 languages is hard enough.
I agree, I think that it would take a while before lots of students became interested in taking ASL, having the class be one semester would be a good idea, it would give students an oppurtunity to learn the basic building blocks.
I think that bigger schools should provide classes teaching American Sign Language. It would be better for the world if more people knew it. But, in a school as small as ours, it wouldn' really make sense. I don't think that very many people would take the class, and it would be hard to get the resources for it.
I agree, I think that it could be hard to get lots of students and teachers that are willing to take an ASL class, but it could be nice for students that want to learn sign language.
