Should drug users be punished or receive treatment?

In our society and for years drug use has been seen as a crime and seen as something bad. The people caught using drugs or doing drug trafficking are usually sent to jail and they’re punished for it. Over time, some countries, and states have started to decriminalize drugs and focus on treatment. The purpose of this is to treat drug addictions like a health issue instead of a crime. States that are doing this are Oregon, California, Colorado, and some more.

There are pros and cons to this. The pros are that this could help people get out of their addiction because usually when they’re sent to jail they will do their time. Once they get out they will start doing drugs again and will either continue this vicious cycle or will overdose and die because of their addiction. If they receive treatment like therapy and counseling it can lead to long-term recovery and prevent relapse. It also helps more people to seek help and get out of their addiction.

However, there is a bad side to it. Some people say that without legal consequences drug use might increase and this could be true which could lead to more deaths because they would just use drugs without being scared of getting caught and then overdose. It is also very expensive to offer treatment to everyone so some people might be unable to get help. Focusing only on treatment could also neglect other issues like crime and public safety.

In my opinion, there are good things and bad things about this. I don’t think that everyone should get treatment and not have consequences because then they might just keep on doing it. I think that they should do an evaluation and if they really do think that the people are interested in the treatment and are not just trying to not go to jail then the treatment can be offered to them but if they ever catch them doing drugs again then they should be sent to jail. I also think that even if they are receiving treatment instead of going to jail it still should go in their criminal records.

Do you think they should be punished or receive treatment?

What treatment do you propose?

Should everyone get treatment?

    • I agree with you. A lot of addictions start from them using drugs because of peer pressure and then after that they just couldn't stop. An innocent mistake took them to a very bad situation so I do agree with you that they deserve a second chance.

  • 1.) I think drug users should receive both, if you do drugs that is your own choice, no matter if you were peer pressured or not. When you are asked for drugs, you have the right to say yes or no. Although you have a choice the first time, it is not a choice afterward due to the substances being addictive. As or after drug users receive punishment, they should also receive treatment.

  • Having an addiction is a disability. Having something that hinders your ability to function normally and make choices with a clear mind isn't something to be incriminated for. If you're dealing drugs and hurting other people by doing so, then you should definitely be put in prison, but the victims of addiction shouldn't be afraid of trying to help purely because of societal prejudices.

  • I feel like some people should get a treatment but not everyone. I feel like it depends on the case since there are worse cases then others. I feel like if the case is bad then I think the should get put in jail but if it is not so bad then I think they should recieve treatment.

    • I agree with you. A lot of people deserve treatment but the people that have been given multiple opportunities and kept doing drugs reach a point where they don't deserve it anymore because maybe there are people out there that need it and would actually profit from it while they don't.

  • I think if the person is selling drugs illegally, then they should be put in jail. But if someone was caught doing drugs and they have an addiction then they should be brought to rehab or therapy to have a chance to get better. If they keep doing drugs after rehab, then they should be brought to jail because they were given a second chance at doing the right thing.

  • I think that this can go both ways. If you are selling and buying something illegal, then yes I think you should be punished. But on the other hand, people who do this and don't get caught and go to jail, should get treatment so that it doesn' thappen again. So I think this situation could go different ways.

  • Do you think they should be punished or receive treatment? I think he should not because it is their opinion and they will feel the effect of the drug. I think that everyone should get treatment if they want it and if they don't then it is their choice.

  • I believe that people should recieve treatment. I think this because punishment won't help their addiction. Drugs can still be handled in prisons and can easily get more time of caught. Better solutions would be rehab. Rehab or rehabilitation programs are better alternatives for drug addicts than prison. I think for most cases, they should get  treatment but overall it depends on the case and what happened.

    • I agree with you, I think that the fact that there are drugs in prisons is a good point. If drug users are sent to a place where there are bad people and do not receive the best treatment then this might make their addiction and mental state worsen.
