When most people see a run down, drug dealing part of town, they try and stay clear of that section and go to the brighter parts of town. After returning back to his hometown of Detroit Michigan from the Army, Tyree Guyton, had noticed that where he grew up wasn't exactly the brighest part of town. Detroit had amost halved in size since he left and many houses were abandoned. Guyton had noticed and decided he wanted to change the sad looking houses. His grandfather's house was first on his list. After some work and dedication, it was covered in many different colored polka dots. Jelly beans were his intention of the design. He said that the candy reminded him of people as they were different on the outside but always the same on the inside.
Eventually he had transformed the whole city into a colorful wonderland. Many of the people left didn't like what he was doing. They thought it looked trashy. But all he could think is "How could this look any worse than before". Today many people travel to Detroit to walk the streets and look at the artwork on the steets. It is a fun, family friendly place to go now instead of a sketchy drug dealing neighborhood.

1.) What do you think would happen if someone were do do this in Harlan or another small town?
2.) Would you ever be brave enough to go out and renovate the outsides of scary buildings?
If someone were to go about Harlan and do something like this, I don't think it would go over too well. I am not sure that the banks or owners of the properties would like it. It would probably be considered vandilizing. I don't think I would be brave enough to go about a small down doing this. I couldn't imagine the amount of courage and bravery it took to do this.

Well done Grace!
1. It would definitely be interesting, but since it's a small town there wouldn't be that many places to do it. I suppose there's bound to be an abandonded old barn somewhere where someone could do something like this, but just not in town. I don't think that it should be done in a small town like Harlan.
2. I would stay clear of the scary part of town, since some bad stuff can go down over there and I want nothing to do with it. As for rennovating buildings, I'm not all that great with designing so I wouldn't do it.
I think this would be bunches of fun to do to homes in Harlan. It would be really cool to see but so much better to decorate. I would take something like this on just because you could go out with your friends and have fun creating a art for the town.
I do agree that doing this sounds like a lot of fun and the outcome and people reactions would be cool to see. I also agree that doing this with people you know well and enjoy hanging out with would be so much fun. Its almost like it could be theraputic to just go out and paint.
I would really like this. I would love to see this happen and I think it would be very cool.
Yes, If I had permission I would do it. It would be a fun time and it would brighten up the town a little bit and give this town some color.
I don't think a lot of people would like it because it would make the neighborhood look like people just went off with paint and did whatever they wanted too. I wouldn't be brave enough, becasue you would have to conisder everyones thoughts and opinions to.
I feel like alo of people would be angry because in small towns we like to have plain colored house not bright funky houses. I feel like if that was something i wanted to do i would do it. But since i dont I think i would be a little scared to renavate some of the houses.
I think if someone did this that they would have so much courage to do this, but I don't think everyone would think that this was a good thing because some people don't like change and if you change their house, I don't think they would like as much. I definitely wouldn't be able to do this because I like people, but I don't like people who don't like you as much and it would be very weird for me.
I think if someone did that in Harlan I could see people being happy and others being upset, jsut like they did in Detroit. I wouldn't be scared to do waht he did. I would wnt to have compainy if anything.
I think that some people probably wouldn't like it ecspecially if they had some sort of connections to any of the houses that would have been transformed, but others would like to see some of the worse parts of town brightened up a little. I think that if I could have my friends or family help me, I would do it because it looks like a fun thing to do.
