Outbreak of Listeria Infections Linked to Deli Ham

On October 3, 2018, Johnston County Hams, Inc. recalled ready-to-eat deli hams because they might be contaminated with Listeria. Four people were hospitalized and one death had been reported. CDC and public health and regulatory officials in several states are investigating a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections. Recalled ham products were produced from April 3, 2017, through October 2, 2018. If you happened to hace some deli ham that is recalled you should return any recalled deli ham to the store for a refund or throw it away. Even if some ham was eaten and no one got sick, do not eat it. If you do not know if the ham you purchased was recalled, ask the place where you purchased it or throw it away.

If you had recalled deli ham stored in your fridge what should you do, other than get rid of the recalled deli ham?

Wash drawers or shelves in refrigerators and freezers where recalled ham was stored/placed, and sanitize the drawers or shelces in the refrigerators and freezerrs where the recalled ham was stored/placed.

What would your first thought and reaction if you found out that you had recalled deli ham in your refrigerator and you had ate some?

I would feel sick to my stomach and wonder how I could have ate that so unknowingly without thinking about it. I would then read how to properly clean and sanatize your fridge so the disease didn't spread to my other food.

  • That was a good bump you did! Well done! -5 late

  • If I had any deli ham in my fridge at the time this situation was taking place I would trough it out and make sure to let my family know why I did it and not to eat it and was everything in my fridge just like you said you would. I would feel so bad if someone had ate the ham and they didn't know about what was going on and help them.

    • I think anyone would feel bad if others got sick because they got some deli ham that was infected with listeria, I know I would feel really guilty and regret ever buying the deli ham.

  • Claen all of your fridge and dishes.  I would just clean myy whole house so i dont get sick! I would get worried about myself because I hate being sick and be worried to eat it again!

    • I see where your coming from but I think cleaning your entire house would be a little too much but it's your life to live not mine so do as you please.

  • Obviously the best thing to do after finding out you have something recalled, whether for malfunctions or disease, is to rid of it properly. You should not keep anything recalled, regardless of what you paid for it. Things like this can be a hazard to human life, and you should not put people at risk because you're to lazy to properly dispose of something.

    • I agree that being lazy is no escuse to get yourself or other sick because of recalled foods.

  • I would wash everything that the recalled ham touched and make sure to wash with bleach. I would stay calm and maybe even call poision control to see what I should do.

    • I think washing with bleach is a good idea so that you make sure the listeria is gone but you would have to make sure that you rinsed off everything really good so that you don't have bleach on all you food. Also I think that calling poision control is a pretty smart idea.

  • I would clean everything out of the refridgerator and throw all the stuff out, then go to the store and get a new deli meat and get the rest of the stuff  that I had in the refridgerator.I would feel sick and feel like doing research about it,then I would feel like throwing the ham out and want to clean everything from the refridgerator.
