Man arrested for shooting at protesters

On August 12th at the unite the right rally a man was recorded shooting at counter protesters. The man who was identified as Richard Wilson Preston was seen yelling at the counter protesters after they were throwing things at him. After the altercation Preston proceeds to shout racial slurs at the counter protesters. After this he pulls a pistol steps back and an fires one at the ground. Police where nearby and said they did not see him shoot the gun or hear the shot. No one was hurt he was later arrested but he has not been charged yet. This took place with in 1000 feet of a school meaning he can be charged with a felony that can mean up to 10 years in prison.

1. Do you think ten  years to much or not enough for this crime.

2. Do you think that the police could have done something quicker

My opinion

I think ten years is enough he didn't try and kill anyone but i do not think he should go unpunished

I think the police herd it happen i just think they did not want to get involved

  • Be sure to work on punctuation a bit better in your summry. You also asked yes/no questions so work to not do that next time. I also think you could have replied more frequently.

  • 1. I believe this is enough time. Although he didn't injure anybody, he could've. Also he had a gun brought to this public place and was using it against people. It also doesn't help his cause any that he was near a school. I definitely think that he should serve his time and  that 10 years is enough. 2. I think so yes, although they said they heard nothing. I think that wherever this man was that some police officer should've heard him. I believe that more police officers should've been there helping, even though they had no clue this were to happen.

  • I wonder how he could shoot without any police officer seeing or hearing him. Of course, there is the video but how could that happen?

To answer your questions: Yes, I think 10 years in prison is long enough because he didn’t hurt anyone. We don’t know why he did what he did. None of us was there so we just try to understand what was in his mind. In my opinion this punishment is hard enough.  And 2nd to the police: As I said before, I don’t know why they didn’t noticed the shooting because the main task of being a police officer is to maintain public safety. I think we need to consider the actions of the police in this situation.

  • I think ten years is enough because he attempted to shoot and although it didn't injure anyone, people could've gotten hurt or even killed. Of course the police can't be everywhere but I'm surprised they didn't come over quicker since there was an outbreak, people yelling, and swearing going on.

  • Yes i agree because this should not go unpunished and ten years for shooting at people seems like a reasonable punishment. Also if the police were standing near by how could you not hear multiple gunshots. There had to be something they could've done instead of stand there and try to turn a blind eye to it. They also maybe just didn't want to get hurt by getting involved but its there duty to do things like that.

  • 1. Ten years is enough in my opinion. Even though he didn't shoot at anyone, he was still in close range of a school. That could have been a bad situation if he shot someone. He should've not yelled racial slurs either.

    2. If the police was more near at the situation, they could've been quicker.

  • I think ten years is enough time because what if he were to try doing this again. How many people could have been killed? I also think that because he was so close to a school it could have been much worse, because what if there were children at the school. The children would be going through a whole other world of hurt. Most of those children would probably be very scared. I think the police could have done something quicker if they would have heard the gun shot or seen it, but because they didn't see or hear anything I don't think that they could have done anything.

  • In my opinion, ten years are enough, because he didn't hurt anyone physically. But of course he has to be punished, because for me shooting in the near of somebody is enough to be punished for.

I don't know if the police could have done something quicker, because obviously I don't know how it really was. What I can say is, that if they heard or saw it they definitely should have gone there and I think that it is there job to get involved! That's what they are there for. To get involved and to help people in threatening situations.

  • I think ten years is a good amount of time. He pulled out a gun which was not the right thing to do in the first place. And second he should of never pulled the gun out that close to the school, there could of been children outside which could've lead to lots of unnecessary injuries. If the police were nearby they easily could have heard the gun shot, for its not to hard to miss considering it's there job for actions like this.

  • Not really I think it's enough. I think they could've.
