Immigrant families reuniting?

In a new creation by Alvaro Morales and Frisly Soberanis,  immigrants in the United States can now reunite with their families that across the border, but not in person. Since the undocumented immigrants can't go back over the border, because they wouldn’t be able to come back, the two friends created the 'Family Reunions Project.' They use a virtual reality, 360 degree technology to make the families seem like they're really face to face. To get the footage, they visit the family in the immigrants hometown, and record videos that they put into the VR and show the person in the United States. Immigrants can sign up for them to be next in the project by going to their website and applying, then waiting to see if they get picked by Morales and Soberanis. The inspiration to make the project came from the fact that the two are both immigrants themselves, and they knew the pain of not being able to see their families because they were scared of the fact that they wouldn't be able to get back in the U.S. So far, the Family Reunions Project has helped over a dozen families, plus their own, and is a very successful work in progress.

If you were an immigrant who could only see your family by VR, would you be satisfied with that or still be angry you couldn't see them?

I would be grateful that I get to contact them at all under the present circumstances, but I would still be a little upset that I can't see them in person with the holidays coming up soon. But I think that this technology is wrong in a way, because it's rewarding undocumented and illegal immigrants, and if they came legally, they would be able to leave the country whenever they wanted.

What is your opinion on illegal immigrants being trapped here in the United States?

I have sort of mixed feelings about it, because I know that they came here illegally, and it's not right for them to come here without waiting like most families, but it's also wrong because it completely strips away their rights as a human and it is definitely not okay to force them to live in the awful immigrant detention centers. But there are immigrants we don't know about, that are here living normal lives, just not able to leave the U.S. to visit their families, and I don't think it's right to reward them since they're breaking a major, major law in this country.

  • Great job Jen!

  • If I were and immigrant and I could only seem the by VR I would just be greatful that I got to talk to them and know how they were doing I would still be a little upset because I would want to see them in person. I think that if your and illeagl immigrant in the United States you should complain and just get your citizenship.

  • I would be satisfied because it would be cool to see your family and see what their up to.It would be sad because your not able to go over to see your family that is in different country not able to see them.

  • It would suck not being able to see them on VR but atleast its a way of talking and seeing them so its better than nothing. And immigrants being stuck here it sucks but they shouldve waited and came legally instead of coming illegally.

  • I think that it is wrong that they have to be separated from their family but they also should have waited like the other immigrants instead of comming to the United States illegally.

  • I would also be grateful that I would have some contact with my family even if it is only on VR but I would be angry that I could not see them in person and I would miss them a lot.

  • I would be angry that I couldn't see my family anymore in person but I would be happy tha ti at least got to see them by VR. I feel bad for them but then again maybe they should have came here legaly and then they wouldn't have this problem.

  • I would be verry happy and grateful because I can talk to them in some way, but I would probably still get a little bit mad because nothing can compares to the fact that all you want is to be able to see your family, like face to face. I think that if I were in their position I would miss my family everyday.

  • I'm an immigrant myself and I know that the process of immigration can take months even years before you are a citizen. I'm glad that people can lessen their pain by seeign their family again even if it was only in vr.

  • If i had to see my family through vr, I would probably feel worse than I would be if I didn't see them at all. I would make me think about how much I miss them. The pain would be unbearable.
