Government Shutdown?

Government Shutdowns

Last week, the government was on the verge of a shutdown. Shutdowns happen when Congress fails to pass a funding legislation that is signed into action by the president. When this funding legislation isn’t put into effect, no paychecks are sent out and all non-essential work is paused. The funding expires on October 1st, so if nothing is passed, work will stop at 12:01 am. There is no set time that the government will be shut down for.

The government shutting down means no paychecks will be issued to millions of federal employees. Other than federal employees, many others are also affected by the shutdown. Businesses that are closely related to the government and lawmakers are both highly affected by the shutdown. Congress will continue to work and get paid but people who are considered not necessary will be put on leave until the funding is passed.

This has happened in the past, since 1976, this has happened 22 times. 10 of those times led to people being put on leave and them not being paid. The longest shut down was when trump was in office and there was a standoff. That shutdown lasted 35 days and was during a holiday season.  To end a shutdown, the congress must come up with a resolution.

Do you think it is right for people to lose their jobs during the shutdown?

Do you think congress should have a deadline for their funding legislation?

Do you think the government will shutdown and how long do you think it will last?

  • This is very similar to websites out there. Be sure to always summarize in your own words. I also am looking for more of your thoughts and opinions on the matter. You didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 30 points. Three days late.

  • I think that people should be able to still get paid during these times. I do not think it is right for people to lose their jobs out of the blue. I think that congress should have a deadline so we do not even have to worry about the government being shut down.

  • I don't really understand why people just can't get paid. It doesn't make any sense that people can be doing their jobs, and just not get paid for the stuff that they already completed.

  • I think its not right that people wont be able to work and recive their paychecks. This goverment shutdown may be something diffrent than the times before.

  • I do not think it is right for people to lose their jobs during a shutdown of the government. Although I do not think this is right, if there is no other solution it has to be done. People losing jobs seems unfair because they did nothing wrong and are facing the consequences of other peoples' actions.

  • I don't think thjat it would be right for people to not recive payckecks and not be able to work. If Congress is not doing its job and cause the government to shut down, then the people should not be punished for it. I think that they should ahve a deadline, so they will always know when they need to do it by, because it is important. I think that if the government shuts down again, it won't be for very long.
