On Tuesday, April 17, on Southwest flight 1380, flight attendants were taking drink orders when Andrew Needum heard a very loud noise. All of a sudden, oxygen masks dropped down from the ceiling. After securing his mask, he went across the aisle to help the rest of his family put theirs on. Then, with his wife’s consent, he hustled to the back to where the sound was coming from. Andrew Needum was a firefighter from Celina, Texas, and he was trained for emergency situations. The noise that he heard was the shattering of the window in row 14. There was an engine malfunction, and pieces of shrapnel had broken the window. Jennifer Riordan was sitting in the seat next to the window. She was sucked into the hole, and many people tried to pull the woman back into the plane, but they were unsuccessful. Andrew Needum was finally able to yank her back into the plane. The flight made an emergency landing, and other passengers performed CPR in an effort to revive her. Sadly, 43-year-old Jennifer Riordan passed away from blunt force trauma to her head, neck, and toro. In respect for the Riordan family, Needum spoke quietly to reporters, and he didn’t give any other information as to what happened in the back of the plane.

  1. If you were on this plane, would you get up and try to pull this woman back on to the plane, or would you stay with your family?

Obviously, I would freak out if this happened on a plane that I were on. I would be in shock. I would try my best to find out what was going on, and I would try to help in any way that I could. I probably wouldn’t be strong enough to pull the woman back on the plane, but I could do CPR.

  1. If you were apart of the Riordan family, would you consider suing the plane company for the accident?

I would be more sad than angry at first...I would definitely make sure that there was an investigation involving the engine malfunction. If it were a freak accident, I wouldn’t sue. But if there was evidence to support that the plane was malfunctioning before, or if the company new about it, I would definitely sue.

      3. Does this accident make you not want to go on a plane?

I don't mind traveling on planes. You could die driving too. I don't think this accident should stop people from traveling on planes, but it probably will for a while.

  • Well done!!

  • I would be really scared if something like this happened on a plane that I was on, so I think that I would stay in my seat and also I probably wouldn't be able to help this woman. I think that the problem with the window breaking needs to be checked out and then that would determine wether I would sue or not. I think this accident was just a random freak thing that happened, so it probably won't happen very often, so I would still go on planes.

  • If I were on the plane I woud try to help everyone  I could but on the other hand I wouldn't put myself in dnager. I've never been on a plane and yes this does make me not to want ot be on a plane.

  • I would try and pull the lady back in because sitting down is one thing but trying to save her is a very heroic act. I would because they didn't catch the mistake and that plane took a mother away from her husband and her two kids and that's horrible they will never get her back. I like planes but I would have been more resistant if I were on the plane I hope the company takes this and looks over there planes very thoroughly.

  • If this happened on my plane I would be very shaken up and probably struggle to put my mask on myself, let alone help another back into the plane through the window. I also am weak enough that I don't think I'd be much help. I would definitely consider suing in the case of negligence, but I know sometimes planes have flukes where you really can't do anything to prevent an accident. Statistically planes are just a dangerous as cars, so I don't think I'd be scared to fly. I might just prefer a different airline.

    • I would probably have a hard time putting the mask on myself too! I think that it would be a very stressful situation. Looking beyond the intesity of the whole thing would be really hard to overcome. I agree, I am not scared of flying just because of this one incident. What do you personally think is more dangerous: cars or planes?

  • I think I woul avoid getting in the way of others that might be able to help her. I would take care of my family and make sure we were doing everything we were supposed to. I would have to check into the facts and have an investigation done involving the plane's condition and what happened throughout all of these traumatic events. If there was negligence on behalf of the company, I would definitely to ensure that nothing similar would ever happen again. There's risk of death involved in everything, so I'm still okay with traveling by plane.

    • I understand why you would stay with your family; you would want to make sure that they were safe. You could also help the people around you. I would also probably have an investigation done to see if family member's death could have been truly prevented. I am also still okay about traveling on planes. We shouldn't be held back by our fears!

  • I would try and help as much as possible. This is sad as well. That women had so much to live for. It's sad she had to die the way she did. I would try to stay calm and go get help so i had help instead of trying to do it by myself. No i would not it was an accident. They had nothing to do with it. So why would that be fair. Yes it does i've never liked planes and this is why because im terrified that something like that will happen but maybe i read too much stuff like this.

  • This is one of those things that happen once in a lifetime. It probably won't happen again for a while now that they can figure out how it happened. I would hope to help in anyway that I could wether that be helping the people around me or pulling someone back into a plane. Either way, I would do as much as a could efficiantly in a timely fashion.
