Do video games promote violence?

Many people say that video games promote violence, especially parents. Parents have stated that violent video games affect their children, making them bully others at school, act out at home, and increase stress. Scientists have recognized this issue and decided to conduct an experiment. Children of the ages 9-12 and around 345 college students were assigned to either play a non violent or violent video game, those who played the violent video games showed more aggression and toxicity then those who played the non violent video games. I believe that it depends on the person who is playing the video game for it to have a negative or positive effect on them.

The university of Utah studdied this issue and relized that most of the vidoe games children promote killing in wars, criminal behavior, Bad language, sexual content, ect. They also state that depending on how much the child plays the game vaires the negitave impact on them.

The same cannot be said for those who played the non violent video games, some parents/guardians limited their kids to playing games like farming simulator, cooking simulator, ect and reported that their children started acting kinder towards kids at school and not having attitude or acting out towards their parents. Though this is good, a majority of children are more focused on their video games than their school work. This causes their grades to start slipping when they don't realize, which is why I think the screen time should be limited to only weekends.

  • Do you think video games promote violence? Yes, violent video games can promote violence because studies show that people that play violent games tend to act more aggressively. The stuff in these games, like killing and bad behavior, can affect how children behave in real life.

  • I don't think that it promotes violence. But if you are playing too much your mind would start to change and show signs of violence. If you are at a young age, you could easily be influenced. That is why games are allowed for a certain age group. But if you pick up violence from games at an older age then that is most likely another problem.

  • I believe video games cause voilence. There are some games though that don't cause violence but I think most of them do. I feel like kids shouldn't start playing violent games until at least they are a teenager. I do think nonviolent games are better for children but I still think that they are not great.

  • 1.) I don't think video games promote violence, I think it is the parents' fault, once you're older, you can play violent video games, but if you are a 3-year-old, you could be easily influenced. So if the parents prohibit them it would never happen.

  • I don't think that Video Games promote violence, but I do think that with some of the really violent games like COD, GTA, etc. that they don't promote violence but I do think they can cause certain behaviors to come out of some people who play them. For example, a 3 Year old, where if you do something that they might think is cool they will mimic it almost like a mirror. So this means that the behaviors exhibited by the characters or people in a game can influence kids or people to do the same. On top of that to prevent it from happening too much, is I would give a child atleast 2,3, or 4 hours of screen time instead of them being on a game all day and night. Also a while ago there was a person who showed experiments with the effects on kids watching a violent show vs. a non-violent show in our auditorium. Which highly relates to this topic.

  • Do you think video games promote violence? No, I don't think video games promote violence. I think it is often the parents that have a bigger effect than the violent games. I do think nonviolent games would be better for the kids. I don't play many violent games I play games more like farming simulators.

  •  I think a lot of videogames promote violence. There should be a higher age rating for games that include violence, because if little kids have access to those games they might not understand right from wrong and think violence is okay in real life situations.

    • I agree with you on this, but I do think that instead of raising the age limits to games that they should make the ratings stricter since we have 7-9 year olds playing GTA which is bad because it makes the effect of the violence on the kids even worse.

  • Do you think video games promote violence? I think that a unhealthy amount of them may lead to and also the type of the game may also be connect to the type of vilence. Do you think that nonviolent video games are better for children? I Think that after a certain age it doesn't matter

  • I do believe that certain games may promote violence but there are games that are just fun and friendly. I do believe that non violent games would be better for children sicne they are little and the game would be easier to understand for them.
