Disturbing Cartoons On YouTube Kids

Many reports have drawn attention to videos with profanity and violent things on YouTube Kids. YouTube Kids is a video-sharing site that is kid-friendly. This program is mainly for 13 year olds or younger. The content shown on YouTube Kids is pulled from the regular YouTube and filtered by algorithms. The computer may see some things acceptable for a 13 year old but videos and things can easily slip through the cracks. Videos can be flagged on the main YouTube as being unsuitable for younger ones, that restricts them from being pulled onto the kids version. The Google owned company came out and said there would be a new policy coming out to improve the program. Disturbing Peppa Pig videos, promoting extreme violence and fear, with Peppa eating her father or drinking bleach were viewed  by many kids off of YouTube Kids. YouTube's global head of family and learning content Malik Ducard, told The New York Times the inappropriate videos were an "extreme needle in the haystack" to find.

Questions-

If you had a child, Would you let them watch YouTube Kids before hearing about this incident?

How would you feel if your child watched the Peppa Pig scene talked about?

My Opinion-

If I had a child I would probably allow them to watch YouTube Kids because it is made for kids so you think it would be ok , but that's now not the case. If my child were to watch something like that I would be very upset for the fact of the YouTube company failing to check the video to make it was a legit episode and not something harsh.

  • Super job Abi!

  • I would allow them to use it because they were marked as safe for kids.  I would be mad that those types of videos passed. I also know that I can't do much after the fact other than reporting it so that other kids don't watch it.

  • If they wanted to and it entertained them then I would but after that I would not make them stop watching it because they probably do not know what that stuff means.  They probably would not know what any of it was so I would let them watch it some more.

  • Before the fact, yes i would have let my children watch this.  Like they said, it was very rare to find something like this on YouTube Kids.  I would probably try and watch what my child was watching to make sure nothing bad was happening. I would be very upset and wonder why that video is on YouTube Kids.

  • I would definitely let my child watch this YouTube for it is meant for kids. But, I wouldn't let them after watching this I would be very angry if they saw this because my child may try doing what they watched.

  • If I had a child you would think upon hearing hat the main goal of the site is without knowing about the little slips on the program that is would be great for children. certainly better for them than regular YouTube I would imagine. But anything can happen and that's just my initial thoughts. After hearing what is on there through things such as Peppa Pig I would definitely have shaken trust in the filtering process of this program.

    • Having younger kids on the internet can be scary because there is so much stuff out there.  I think it would be hard to talk to your child after they watch something like this , depending on age but the YouTube company needs to pay attention to these things.

  • 1. I would let them watch it because I would have thought it was a safe place for my children to watch good shows. Steering them away from normal YouTube and finding this would be something I would definitely something I would do because I would have thought that it is a safe and "clean" place for my kids to watch TV.

    2. I would be horrified. This is not something my child needs to watch or see. I would definitely file a report and/or complain to the leaders of YouTube Kids.

    • Very true! Anything can be swiped over to YouTube kids. You wouldnt want you child to come across something bad and scare them. I also agree the TV has alot of channels streaming children shows and that would be a better option for them to watch!

  • I would allow them to use it because they were marked as safe for kids. I think that I would be mad that they allowed those kinds of videos to pass and be part of the website. I also know that I can't do much after the fact other than reporting it so that other kids don't watch it. I would also set my kid down and explain that that behavior isn't accepted.
