Deadly Weather in Southern Mississippi

Mississippi and other parts of the South East are going through some severe weather right now. Early Saturday, a EF3 tornado ripped through Southern Mississippi. It  killed 4 people, and injured 20 more. The National Weather Service is saying parts of Mississippi could potentially see tennis ball sized hail and up to 60 mile per hour winds. Flash flooding has also been threatening the area as well. The severe weather is also supposed to be heading for Alabama and Florida. Sadly this is not the end of severe weather in Southern Mississippi. They're expected to get more severe storms which could possibly produce another tornado.

Questions

1.  How do you think this has affected the people and families affected by the tornado?

2.  Do you think there should be better systems to warn and protect people from weather like this?

3.  What kind of affect on a community does an event like this have?

  • I think this severe weather has taken a huge toll on several people and families in the southeast.  Whether they were directly affected by the storm, or even if they knew someone who was affected, I'm sure the storms were devastating.  I think the physical damage is probably immense, but I also think emotional damage could be a problem for those who lost someone.  I think there should be better systems to protect people from severe weather, especially since we are always evolving with technology. As I said, an event like this would cause physical and emotional damage for a community, but I also think this would make a community and surrounding towns come together.

  • I think that people and families were devastated by this storm. Their homes and stuff were destroyed so they have no place to go or stay. It is probably hard for them to make money because their jobs could have been destroyed. I think that the systems are just fine. If there is a storm and its coming right for you you cant do anything about it. I think that it ruins the community, but in the other hand it makes the community become stronger and work together.

  • This has probably hurt a lot of family's by destroying there town and hurting many people. People out there are probably homeless because there is no where to go. I think the systems are good as they can get. Being in a tornado is hard to make sure EVERYONE will be ok you kinda have to just go somewhere safe and hope for the best. I hope the community works together to try to make it better.

  • I agree, those are some great points

  • Many properties were destroyed, so families would be devastated and homeless. Those people will be scarred for life with this experience. I think we have a pretty good system to warn people of the weather. We need to remember that weather is unpredictable. It also doesn't help that sometimes we take warnings lightly and not as serious as we should. This puts a community to the test and requires everyone to work together to pick other people and their lives up.

  • A lot of the homes were destroyed so families didn't have a place to go. If they knew the storm was going to be bad and that it was coming then they could have evacuated. It probably bring the community together because everyone is helping each other out.

  • It would probably be a terrifying thing to go through, making sure your family will be safe and your community too. I think natural disasters can happen whenever, having better systems would really be beneficial. This event overall could be life changing, loosing everything and having to pick up/start again can be hard.

  • It was probably scary to go through this natural disaster and not knowing if your family is okay. I definitely think their should be a better system to warn people. I think it can bring a community together to help each other out.

  • The families are probably worried and scared for what has happened and what is going to happen. I think that there could be better systems put in place, but for right now what we have is going to have to work. This has a huge impact. These storms can wipe out an entire community and that's what makes it hard on those families.
