Conjoined McDonald Twins are seperated

In a room at Blythedale Children's Hospital in Valhall, New York, Sons of Nicole and Christian McDonald, Jadon and Anias had recovered for the past nine months of rehabilitation after the surgery to separate them. They underwent a 27- hour separation in October. They were 13 months at the time and they had shared 5 by 7 centimeters of brain tissue making the surgery even more difficult. The twins only knew the world by lying on their backs because they were conjoined at the head. After the surgery they learned how to use muscles that they didn't even now existed. 1 out of 2.5 million are kids are conjoined at the head. People donated more than $340,000 to the family. The two boys go to therapy to make their muscles stronger each and every day. The therapist say that they have made lots of progress already.

Questions-

  1. How difficult do you think it would be if you had conjoined twins?
  2. If you were this family how would you feel after the surgery?

Answers-

  1. I think it would be very difficult, especially if they were conjoined at the head. It would be so hard to care for them because I'm sure they have to take tons of medications, and you would have a lot of doctor visits, it would just make me really sad for them.
  2. I would feel so relived, I mean you would still have to care for them a lot, but then your kids would be able to live their lives separated. They would be able to do so much more things.

  • Well done Jacey! I do think you could have replied a few more times to student comments.

  • I think that it would be difficult at first but you would get used to it after a couple of years. It would become normal to you eventually. If I was part of this family I would be nervous about the operation till it was done and I knew they would be okay.

    • I so agree there could have been so much bullying if they didn't get separated.

  • 1. I think it would be really hard to be conjoined at the head because you wouldn't be able to do anything or move at all.
    2. I would feel extremely happy that the kids could finally live as their own person and be able to more things on their own.

  • It would be very tough because you almost could never leave them, and you would have to be extra careful and it would be completely different.

I would feel really happy that now you know that they can have more normal lives and a better future.

  • It would be hard to do anything because someone is with you 24/7 and it would actually make me mad. It would make me happy that my children were separated and they didn't have to go through life like that but it would also be hard because they would have to learn everything that we almost do naturally.

  • I think it would be very difficult because your whole life would change.

I would be glad that there was a cure. It would cost lots of money though.

  • This story is incredible! I think it's amazing to think about all of the insanely smart people who were involved in this surgery. I feel sympathy for the parents of the twins, because they had to deal with such a tragedy over the past 13 months. However, it makes them think about all of the things they are grateful in life for, and gives them the chance to be overjoyed now that they are separated. I would be so thankful for the doctors that completed the surgery and so excited for the futures of my twins now that they can live separate lives. This story reminds me of Ben Carson and all of his outstanding achievements.

    • I agree, if I was helping with this surgery I would be extremely nervous, as you don't want to do something wrong.

  • I think it would very difficult to have children with this problem, it would be very hard on the kids but also hard on you with all the appointments they may have and the medications they have to take for everything to properly work. I would feel extremely blessed for all the doctors and nurses that helped with everything and others that helped make life a little easier for both kids and parents.
