Co-Ed Youth Team Refuses to Play

A co-ed catholic youth team out of New Jersey has recently made headlines over their teams courageous decision. From the beginning, their basketball team of 10, both boys and girls, had played without any issues. Once making it to the playoffs, league officials told the team that the girl members were not allowed to play. This news upset the team, resulting in them backing out of the playoffs. Unknowing to the group, teams are only allowed to be co-ed through the fourth grade. Seeing how the rule is not fair, the team forfeited. Adults within the team were proud of the choice made by the kids and applauded them. Although their season was over, the kids stayed together and scrimmaged as a team.

-Do you think teams should only be able to be co-ed up until fourth grade? Why?

-What would you have done if you were in the team members situation?

Opinion:

- I think that some programs should be allowed to be co-ed past fourth grade. It teaches a lot to the kids and doesn't promote sexism that is usually involved in physical activities and sports.

- I would have also chosen not to play. It wouldn't have been fair to the girl members.

  • Well done Paydn! -10  2 days late

  • I think this situation was handled well, both boys and girls should be able to play on the same team if they choose so. If a girl wanted to play football they should be allowed to. I would stand up for my opinion if I had to deal with something like this.

  • I think that it should be just like football, soccer, and baseball. If the girls want to play on the same team as the boys then they should be allowed to. I probably would've argued with someone about it but I think they handled it well.

  • I think in things like a catholic youth team they should be able to be co-ed. I don't think things like high school sports should be able to be co-ed, but anything other than that I think people should have the right to form co-ed teams. I would have done the same thing if I was in the team's situation. I would not want to play if they whole team couldn't play. They were able to play through the whole season like that without a problem. They shouldn't be called out on it in the playoffs if they had been playing like that the whole year.

    • I agree. Especially with a catholic school, coed shouldn't be a problem.

  • I think in certain situations that teams should be co-ed but I don't think that there is any reason why boys and girls can't play together. I understand that they can't be in the same locker room together but that shouldn't be stopping them from playing together. If I was on that team I wouldn't have played either. That is unfair to all the players not just the girls. The whole team may be missing out on some good players.

  • I agree that some programs should allow co-ed teams even past the fourth grade. I don't think it would affect anyone in the upper grades. If it does, then it might not be something for you. If I was one of the team members, I would have done the same thing and not played and just forfeited.

    • Good point, if some can't handle the coed then they shouldn't necessarily be apart of that program.

  • I think it's ok to have co-ed teams. That brings so much more to the team and it promotes equality as well. If people wanted to there could be boys, girls and co-ed teams. I would not have liked it, but if that's the rules of that league then they should be respected. I find it funny that they found out that they couldn't play that late. It's weird that nobody said anything or found it out sooner.

    • I agree, promoting equality would be a good step with the situations society is facing currently with feminism, etc.
