Are voilent video games bad for kids?

In some recent studies it is shown that a few violent video games like Doom Wolfenstein 3D or Mortal Kombat can increase a person's violent thoughts, feelings, and behavior both in lab studies and in actual life. In 2 studies appearing in April’s issue of the APA’s Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Violent video games provoke these thoughts and actions more than movies and other television networks.

Though some studies say that they are not good for the brain and provoke thoughts and behaviors in a negative way, I think that some of the games that parents think are violent are not as bad as they think. But others show very graphic and extremely lifelike games that could cause some issues with younger kids.

There are games where there are guns but no blood and gore like some other games. There are a lot of games that just tell you numbers when you hit them and don’t have any graphic images whatsoever. This could honestly be good in a way. I think if they are exposed to guns and taught about them at a younger age, with no blood and gore, then they can learn to not do bad with them.

I personally think that it doesn't affect your thoughts and stuff tremendously to where they need to be banned under a certain age, but some games could be regulated because of the level of gore. Others may disagree with me but my opinion is that it doesn't tremendously affect behavior.

Do you think some games should be banned or regulated for younger people?

Do you think they actually affect how they act in real life? Why or Why not?

  • Great topic choice and well done Carson. I wouild have liked you to dig a bit further on the reseatch. One day late.

  • I think violent video games should be banned for young children. I think that there is more productive activities for them to be doing at this age, that will help their brains continue to grow in positive ways. Not playing these video games often will help build stronger lifestyle and future.

  • I think violent video games do affect children and are bad for them. What a child sees regulary becomes "normal" to them, so if it is violence they will they that is okay. I do believe that these video games affect their thoughts, feelings, and emotions like you stated.

  • I don't think violent video games really affect most kids in real life. A lot of people can tell the difference between a game and real life. But for some younger kids, it might make them more aggressive or act out, so it depends on the person. That's why there should be some limits.

  • I don't think violent video games should be banned, but they should be regulated for younger kids. Some games are way too intense and younger people might not handle them well. Parents should just pay attention to what their kids are playing.

  • Violent video games could very much be banned for the young. They could have a big effect on a kid's future decisions. They could cause kids to make very bad decisions. Also if they grow up in a violent family that could increase their chances too.

  • I don't think that violent video games should be banned. The parents are the ones who can control if they want or don't want their kids to be playing these grafic games. I don't think that these games have a big negitve affect on kids' behavior, because they know the difference between real and fake and most kids aren't playing video games all the time.

    • I agree with the fact that parents can regulate the games their kids play and how much they play them so if they have a problem with them it is most likely their fault.

  • I believe violent video games do not negatively affect kids' behavior. I found an article from the American Psychological Association, and it said there is no evidence that violent video games cause violent behavior. Video games give kids an easy way to get rid of stress and improve their hand-eye coordination. I also think some parents could blame their kids' behavior on video games, but when in reality, they're just bad parents.
