Over the past years small farmers have been crushed by the price of their goods going there by the floor they have gone down by almost 50%. With their prices going down the price that it takes to produce their product is going through the roof. Leaving them razor thin margins also leave many if not almost all farmers with debt. The avg small family farm is 250k in debt. While a large operation is in 1.8M in debt. Leaving both in large amounts of debt with producing costs continuing to rise and the price of their goods not rising at all. Small farmers who are in the crop industry are taking a huge hit as all of the land for sale is selling at such a high price that only the large sized farmer has the money to buy the land and it’s so competitive that it's almost impossible for them to expand. This is causing big farmers to get bigger and small farmers to get smaller and crushing the medium sized farmers too.
I think the small farmer is slowly but surely dying and that families won't be able to survive off of 300 acres and a couple animals. I think that large farms will take over the industry creating a monopoly and control the price of grain and ultimately food too. I think that we need to try and make sure that small farmers can survive and flourish in today's agriculture
Do you think that it is possible for a small family farm to survive in 2024?
Do you think that large farms are taking over?
How do you think farmers could get out of debt?

Good topic choice Barrett! I do think your summary is brief overall and be sure to check back later on Thursday to reply to students.
Do you think that large farms are taking over?i do belive big farmers are taking over i belive the reason most of the big farmers can still run is tax fraud with crop it is very esy to comit tax fraud an exempel happped this year but the risk while doing this is the person is now in jail for 30 years
i think under the right situation it is possible for a small farm to survive. large farms are taking upland that small farmers need, aswell as making the market prices drop. i think in order to get out of debt farmers would have to down size equipment, and take more time to get fields finished and get better yields.
I think that it can still be possible but things might have to change, you will have to adjust. I do think that large farms are taking over, but more so in rual areas. How I think farmers can get out of debt is buy being carful with your purchases and making sure that you truely need it. Overall I think that they could be able to survive they just need to be smart with it.
Yes I think its possible for a small family farm to survive as though there are challenges to making it work out. I dont think that larger farms are taking over I just think that there becoming more sucessful and known for now. I would say selling more products to make more money.
How do you think farmers could get out of debt?I think that smaller farmers could get out of debt by selling their products to farmers markets and small shops. Lots of people prefer to get their produce and things like milk and eggs from smaller businesses and places where its fresher than the average grocery store. Therefor, selling their products to these shops means that they would make more money than selling them to large companies.
Having a small farm in 2024 is a tremendous challenge, but it is possible. The probability of larger, on-brand farms forming a monopoly is steadily growing. I think the government should pass debt relief for small farmers so that they have a chance to continue family tradition.
I think that it is still possible for small farmers still survive. But I also think that large farms are taking over. They are able to get their hands on better access to technology and more efficiency. They are more competitive rather than a small farm. Large farms can produce more food more efficiently and at such a low cost. Having access to better and more advanced technology means increased productivity, which could push a small farm out of the market.
I agree that it is still possible to survive and that large farms are taking over. Also that larger farms produce most of our crops, etc. making it harder for smaller farms to keep up.
I feel like most of the farmers can"t survive 2024 but I still feel like some can. Most of the farmers probably won't be able to survive since they can get out of debt. I feel like the large farmers are taking over since they have so many more crops. I feel like farmers can get out of debt if they can't afford there land and if they don't have any crops.
