3D Printed Village?

Two companies, ICON and New Story, have come together to try and end homlessness with a new method. This method involves a massive 3D printer called the Vulcan in which can 3D print a full house in just under a day. These houses are capable of housing 3-4 people and are possibly the solution to homelessness in small countries. Later this year ICON is  going to be building 10 new homes in El Salvador. They want to end up building a small village of 100 homes which could possibly house nearly 300-400 people. This idea seems to solve a lot of problems for poor countries, however, it comes with its own risks. Lawrence Sass, a building expert says that these types of homes are unsafe, the vulcan builds these buildings by layering material. Sass says these layers could easily come apart and start to slide on each other. He worries that in El Salvador, a earthquake prone country, the houses will fall apart and potentially hurt people. ICON and New Story also plan to share this technology with other companies to progress in the fight against homelessness.

Is it possibly these houses could solve the homeless problems countries have?

I believe that if they are able to advance the technology far enough and can make them safe enough they could easily solve a lot of the problems we have with people being homeless.

Do you think these houses would be safe?

I think that overall the houses would be safe unless exposed to severe weather like tornados and hail which would normal a normal house anyways. If they are cared for and built with good materials I think they could be as good as any other cheap house.

  • Well done!

  • I could be the solution to the homeless problem. but I don't know if the houses are very safe or sturdy. how long are the houses going to last. how strong are they? what are are they going to survive the climate?

  • I think it could eventually be possible but maybe not yet. I also think that it would take a very long time to be able to print a house. I think the houses could be safe for a while but not that long.

  • I think these homes would take forever to make and it could become very difficult. I think it seems that these house wouldnt be very safe especially in server wether and such. They could put a home up and then test it maybe to make sure they are reliable.

  • These 3D printed houses seem like they would take forever to create. It sounds like it could help a lot of different people in many ways. I don't think that 3D houses could even sound safe. This is a huge advance in technology and they should test these things out before actually using them for human beings.

  • If they can make some improvements on the this technology to make the houses more sturdy against earthquakes then I think it could really benefit the population that lives there. I think if the houses were reinforced with steel or something then I think it would be safe. I think without reinforcement then I don't know.

  • If they are able to advance the technology they have right now and make improvements to what they already have, it could definitely solve some of the homeless problems. They seem like they would be relatively safe-- other than under very rough conditions of course.

    • You are right if they keep up these advances in 3D printing technology there is no limit to the types of houses they could build and would have great potential especially while dealing with homelessness.

  • I think that if they figure out a very efficent way to make these homes that would be good for society. I think that the houses would be safe unless something very severe happens.

    • I think that finding an efficient way to make these houses could help the homelessness issue. I also agree that if severve weather happened that these houses wouldn't hold up.
