- Iron Curtain Speech - Winston Churchill; Communist countries in the East were behind the "Iron Curtain" and the democratic on the West side
- Domino Theory - Goal to stop the spread of communism
- Policy of Containment - US policy to prevent communism without nuclear warfare; George Kennan 1947
- Truman Doctrine - Assist in preventing Greece and Turkey from falling into communism; 1947
- Marshall Plan - George C. Marshall; aimed at western European countries to prevent them from falling into communism
- Brinkmanship - pushing military to brink of war without actually going to war
- Massive Retaliation/Mutual deterrence/Mutual Assured Destruction - country attacks another, the other retaliates even heavier/knowing of massive retaliation so not attacking in the first place/basically Alpha vs. Omega
- NATO vs Warsaw Pact - WP=established by USSR, wanted to maintain peace; NATO=(US) Western European defensive alliance in the Cold War against Communism;axis and ally powers of the Cold War
- CIA vs KGB - CIA=Central Intelligence Agency, spying;KGB=Soviet international intelligent Secret police, CIA and FBI wrapped into one for USSR
- Peaceful Coexistence - competition without war, comm. vs non-comm.
- De-Stalinization - Russia taking down after effects of Stalin; political reform
- Detente - easing of tensions (french); US and USSR relations got better
- Perestroika - Russian; political movement for reformation of the Communist Party
- Glasnost - Russian; change in the Communist Party
- Nuclear Test Ban Treaty 1963 - banned countries from testing nuclear weapons above ground
- Nuclear Non-proliferation treaty 1968 - not everyone gets nuclear weapons
- Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) - Treaty between US and USSR for the banment of missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons; 1972
- Anti-ballistic Missile Treaty 1972 - US and USSR signed to agree not to make a weapon that would destroy any nuclear weapon shot at them
