  1. 1.      What are the main historic events that took place in 8th Grade US History that helped shape the United States up to 1877?(10 points)-Chapters 1-4

Columbus started the European colonization of America. The industrial revolution made more jobs but made a lot of pollution. The war of 1812 gave the Star Spangled Banner. Civil war split the country into two halves of who did or didn’t want slavery. The Revolutionary War was fought to cut off the ties to Great Britain and gain independence. The Reconstruction - After the Civil War where the south had to be brought back into the U.S. and the nation had to be rebuilt.

13th amendment- abolish slavery

14th amendment- Blacks became U.S. citizens

15 amendment- gave blacks the right to vote

 

  1. 2.      How did the US change during the late 1800's and early 1900's?(10 points)-Chapters 5-8

Segregation-laws and restrictions everyone had to pay an annual tax people in order to vote. Had to do a literacy test, had to read and write. Grandfather clause: if your father or grandfather were qualified to vote, so were you.

Immigration-came from everywhere, sought independence, gold rush, religion

 

  1. 3.      What impact did the Progressives have on the United States?(10 points)-Ch. 9

15- Right to vote for African Americans

16- made income tax

18- denies distribution of alcohol

19 – voting rights for women

 

Child Labor Laws-prevents children from working long hours and with more money

  1. 4.      Describe US Foreign Policy in the late 1800's and early 1900's and be able to give examples.(10 points)-Ch. 10

Old Diplomacy-passive, isolationist, non-interventionist, weak army and navy

New Diplomacy- imperialism, militarism, interventionist, strong nationalism

Big stick diplomacy-Speak softly but carry a big stick

Spanish-American War US tried to buy Cuba in 1854. Cubans revolted against Spain frequently, wanting independence, in every decade.

 

  1. 5.      What impact did World War I have on the United States?(10 points)-Ch. 11

Almost all men were sent into the war.

Women were used more in the factories.

Children made victory gardens

People bought war bonds

After the war it brought our country closer together.

  1. 6.      What impact did the United States have on World War I?(20)

Gathered more people that Germany thought and we cut off almost all supplies and troop routes from Germany and pushed them back.

 

Basically ended the war

 

  1. 7.      What positive and negative impact did the 1920's have on the United States?(20 points)-Ch. 12-13

Prohibition - the illegalizing of alcoholic beverages, bootlegging is the illegal making and distribution of alcohol.

Organized Crime - Gangsters like Al Capone and others

The Jazz Age - Jazz was huge in this time period

Electricity - new devices that made life easier

The Red Scare - they were fearful that communists would come and start revolutions in the U.S.

The Palmer Raids - Raiding Communists and Anarchists and deporting them back to their home country. Made people panic.

Ku Klux Klan - When African Americans get any sort of rights the KKK reemerge because they believe immigrants shouldn’t have rights

Automobile - faster transportation for people and goods.

Scopes Monkey Trial – John Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution and had a trial. The trail was science vs. Christian beliefs. Evolution was made illegal in all schools in Tennessee. Scopes was found guilty and was fined $100.
