1. What are the main historic events(hit five) that took place in 8th Grade US History that helped shape the United States up to 1877?(10 points)-Chapters 1-4

Christopher Columbus: The discovery of America in 1492, was seeking a trade route to the east indies. Called the natives Indians because he refused to admit he had not made it to the east indies. Led to the spread of disease and Christianity in the new world.

13 colonies:founded between 1607 and 1733. they were British colonies that were made up mostly of independent farmers. each colony had developed it's own system of self government. Eventually became the US

American Revolution: The 13 colonies banded together to revolt against the British Parliament. They had no representation in the Government but they were being heavily taxed. the Revolution started in 1775. The colonies won because of guerrilla warfare tactics and help from the Spanish and the French.  

Settling of the west: We had a spirit of manifest destiny. We believed we had right to the land west of the colonies. Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana purchase that doubled the size of the country and cost 15 million. Lewis and Clark charted the Missouri river and was the first expedition to the pacific coast. The railroad later made settling the west more plausible.

Civil War: Was a war between the Northern states and the Southern states who succeeded from the Union over the Issue of slavery. The southern states were afraid the north wanted to abolish slavery. the election of Lincoln didn't help because he was against the spread of slavery to the north. Hostilities began in 1861. Lincoln issued the Emancipation proclamation which made ending slavery a war goal. death rate was 10% of the men on the north side and 30% of the men in the south. The North won in 1865.

People began to move out west because of the rise of trains, and the gold rush. The homestead act encouraged people to go and settle land in the west. The industrial revolution happ
