April 20 - 24

Monday - Wednesday - Work Days

Thursday - Red Scare - Julius and Ethel were spies for the Soviet Union, they were executed in 1953. Iron Curtain speech scared people. The USSR detonating their bomb scared people. China becoming communist, Korean War, Berlin incident. Chinese Civil War - 1928 - 1927 WWII 1946 - 1950 Communism wins. Taiwan was recognized as China for about 20 years because we didn't deal with the communist China. Alien Registration Act of 1940 - Made it illegal to advocate the overthrow of the U.S. gov't. Required all adult citizens to register with the gov't. McCarthy gave a speech saying that in his brief case he had 205 people in the gov't who were communists. A lot of people followed him but Dwight Eisenhower didn't like him but couldn't say that because then he'd look soft on communist. McCarthy started to attack the military and Eisenhower didn't like that, once he went against him everybody else stopped listening to him. HUAC went after directors and actors, believing that Hollywood were full of communist propaganda. Charlie Chaplin was blacklisted and thrown out of our country. He didn't come back until 1972 and he left in 1950.

Friday - Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis - When we took over Cuba we promised not to take over the Chinese. It was considered a rich vacation spot. In 1950's Fidel Castro took over and allied with the Soviets. He ran Cuba from 1959 - 2011. His brother took over and now we're closer to them. We planned an invasion where we rallied anti-Castro Cubans to fight back. It went terrible because Fidel found out about the plan and waited at the beach, they were captured or killed. Russia thought that we would invade Cuba so they put nukes there. They agreed to take theirs out of Cuba if we took our nukes out of Turkey and didn't invade Cuba. We blockaded Cuba so no missiles could go in or out. We didn't take our nukes out for 6 months so it didn't look like we did it because of the whole incident.

Berlin Wall - The Berlin Wall had checkpoints but not many could cross over. It was built to keep people in East Berlin. November 9th, 1989 the wall came down.
