Went through video notes. Rewatched/finished video and started part two. We watched a video in Hickock. In Kansas city, beef was a huge buisness. The Open Range / Cowboy era ended because demand for beef dropped as well as prices, so  drovers were laid off, herders were kicked out because of fences put up by farmers. and more railroads were built so there was no need for herders/drovers. We ended with a last video on texas today.

We finished our video notes. A lot of Indians were kicked out of their land (The Trail of Tears) and into Indian territory which is just north of Texas in Oklahoma.  Today there is little to no Indian land in the East, the most is in Arizona. People killed buffalo for money, fun, and to try and to defeat the indians better because they knew the Native americans relied on them heavily. Dawes Act 1887- Gave Native American families land to farm and those that agree would be granted US citizenship. The goal was to "Americanize" them or christianize them, but to also help them get out of poverty. Whoever didnt volentarily go to the Dawes Act were fought in wars. We discussed some of the Famous Native American battles. from 1850 - 1890 from 9000 to 129,000 rainroads appeared at extrordanary rates. Life on the Great Plains was not easy. They were all by themselevs in the middle of nowhere, it was very lonely. Sand/Dust storms were a big problem as well as blizards in the winter time, sometimes the blizards would nearly cover their houses.

The rail roads helped build the great plains by bringing out workers to work the train, build the railroad, follow work from the supplies on the trains, transportation, etc. In about the 1870's, insect plagues became a big problem in the Plains, especially the Rocky Mountain Locusts. They became extinct in 1902 possibly because the buffulo died out and the locusts may have relayed on the buffolo. Another reason might be because farmers killed alot of the eggs until they died out. In 1875, the largest recorded locust swarm was 1,800 miles long and 110 miles wide. Back then, they tried fire or hoperdosers, which are these big metal plates covered in tar pulled by horses through feilds to catch the bugs. Throughout the mid-late 1800s, Native Americans attacked settlers in many parts of America. People in the plains built their own houses out of either sod (soddies) or in the sides of hills (dug outs) because there was not a lot of trees to use to build with. Farmers faced a lot of problems with railroads because they were forced too pay what the railroads charged to haul their crops to sell because there was no other way to transport their crops. Crop prices dropped because of overproduction (supply + demand). After the Civil War, the amount of money in circulation went down, so money became more valuable which made it harder to pay back dept. The Grange is the organisation in the US that encourages families to work together to promote the social, economic, and political well being of farmers. The granger Laws were designed to fight back against railroad abuses, wanting railroads to charge fair prices. They were State laws however, and railroads tried to sue over these granger laws.  - Commerce Act- Allowed the US Government to supervise railroads and required railroads to be fair and just. For a log time the railroads ignored the Law but Teddy Roosevelt was the one to really enforce the laws. Populist Party (The peoples party) - Omaha platform - Haped farmers out of debt and gave people a greater voice in government. It also increaed money supply in circulation, it graduated income tax, etc.
