8.1African Americans- Reconstruction, blacks won back their politcal and social rights. Most whites still didn't believe that the whites and blacks were equal. 20th century, Southern states had a system of legal policies of racial decrimination and began to put down the African Americans. There were laws restricting blacks civil rights bLACKS WERE NEVER treated the same and were always segregated from the whites.Voting Restrictions- New restrictions for AFrican Americans men voters in the south. Most had to know how to or take a literacy test-including whites. Blacks weere asked more difficult questions or given a test in a different langauge. Officials could pass or fail anyone they choose. Poll Tax. The Grandfaterh Clause. If a man, his or his grandfatehr and been able to vote before January 1, 1887. Wre not able to pay poll tax or pass the test, they could still vote.Jim Grow Laws- Racial segegation laws to seperate whites and blacks in public private places. Same time blacks lost voting rights. From song and dance "Jump Jim Crow" white actors and would portray a black man and would perform comedy. Segregation was in schools, hospitals, parks and transportation systems in the south.Plessy Vs. Ferguson- Legal case for fairness of segreation to the US surpreme Court in 1896. They ruled that it was legal and didn't violate the 14th amendment. "seperate but equal" black and whites could still be segreated but had to have equal services. Resulting in legal segregation for close to 60 years. Southern States governments will neve3r allowed blacks equal facilities or quality resources after teh debate.Relationship between races and violence- Racial Etiquette humiliated Africans. Whites and blacks were never shook it implied them being equal. African Americanas had to yield to white people on side walks. Blacks had to remove their hats forwhites Not only blacks who didn't follow the racial etiquette but mexicans and chinese. Were faced with severe punishment or death. They were lynched- killing ritual done to blacks, like hanging or burning. When they disobeyed the law.Discrimination in the North- Blacks migrated north- better paying jobs and getting treated equal,. Forced into segreated neighborhoods blacks were oftenm the last resort for labor and jobs- blacks always fired before whites. Sometimes things became violent blacks weren;t treated equal in the workpalce. New York City- race riot of 1900 a black killed white Officer when he thought he was miss treating his wife.Discrimination in the West- Mexicans, Asians and Chinese were also discriminated agaisnt. In the 1800s railroads hired more Mexicans than any other ethnic group. They were used to hot dry weather adn for less pay. AFrican Americans and Mexicnas debt peonage went into slaver to pay off debt. While peoples fear of job completion and chinele pushed the chinese into segreated schools and neighboorhoods.
