Should We Be Required to Take PE in Highschool?

In high school many students are involved in sports, activities, or clubs. Some students prefer to have a study hall or another class over physical education. The first teaching of physical education was in 1825 by a German named Charles Beck in Massachusetts. The big question is; Should students be required to take PE? There are many pros and cons of being required to take PE as a high school student.

Firstly, the pros. In highschool many students are very busy with work and school work. Sometimes this causes them to not get physical activity every day. Requiring PE would help those students move their bodies throughout the day. Another pro would be relieving stress. During the day all of the students' classes are just learning and homework, PE would let the students forget about the stress of homework and move their bodies. Studies have shown that physical education can improve academic behavior, enhanced concentration, and improved class behavior.

On the other hand, many students do not prefer to be required to take PE. Some students want to participate in physical activity less than others. As they would rather spend their time on something they enjoy. It takes students out of a class that they might have more interest in. Students may want to use the hour for college classes or trade school classes.

I feel highschool students should be required to take PE. When students are required to take PE it gets them to move their bodies. I believe that will help them relieve some stress, hopefully causing them to do better in classes. Oftentimes students would like to work out at home or at the gym but they get busy with work or school and don’t get around to doing it as often as they’d like.

Do you think highschool students should have to take PE?

Do you think if you’re in a sport you should be exempt from PE?

Do you think it is good that the teachers pick the games for the students in PE?

    • I also think that PE should be manditory for students who are not in sports. I think those students in sports should at least get to pick whether they want to be in PE or not, during their sport season.

  • They should have to take PE if they aren't in a sport, since they aren't really fit. I do think we should be exempt from PE if we are in a sport, but should only be allowed to do strength and conditioning. I think it's good the teachers pick the games because it might be a game we never played before.

  • We should have pe as a required elective  because it can help student learn how to work out and know the rules about a sport. If you are in a after school activty you shouldnt be in pe. The teacher be able to pick out the game or every now and then let the students pick.

    • I agree. I think if you are in a sport you should have the option to take PE. I also agree that the student and teacher should both pick out games every few weeks.

  • I think PE should not be required, but strongly encouraged. It is the persons' responsibility to make sure they are getting enough exercise throughout the week. There is college class study halls, which makes you exempt from having to take a PE class, and I think that is a good idea, but for any class. The PE class period could benefit some students by giving them an extra study hall and more time to complete their homework.

    • I agree. I think sttudents should have the responsibility to know that they need to move their body even just a little bit. Some people are just very busy to go workout after school.

  • I think that PE should be required for students who are not involved in any sports to be able to get physical activity and move around a little bit. But those who are involved sports I cant really see why the extra physical activity wouldnt be needed. For that reason I think that students should have the option to be enrolled in a PE class or not when involved with sports.

    • I agree I think the student should be able to pick if they want the extra movement or just another class that they might be interested in.

  • I feel that PE should be required at least everyday for one semester. I think PE is a great form of exercise yet can still be fun. PE also gives students a break from school work. Personally, I like PE because it takes my mind off of school or other events going on. It gives me and my mind a nice break.

  • I personally think high school students should be required to take at least a semester of a PE class. But, I do think that if you are in a sport you should have the option to take a PE class or not. I think it is good for everyone to get some type of movement in throughout the week.
