Should school days be shorter?

Every week students are going to school almost 40 hours every week (8 hours, 5 days a week). Students also start their day very early in the morning When students are in school for longer they are able to learn more and they would have more time to get their homework done, but then teachers, some days have lessons that can take the whole 43 mins to give the lesson and leave no time to get homework done. Some students struggle to balance their life outside of school and school-work. Some students tend to put sports and their lifestyle and “not” have time to do their homework.  So shorter days for students would give them more time to balance school and their life outside of school.

On the other hand, shortening school days would force schools to extend the days students are in school. In Iowa a student is required to be in school for atleast 1,080 hours every school year. Shortening days will only benefit the students that have sports and jobs after school and not those who have nothing. Shortening days for students affects all students not just high school and middle school students but kids in Primary and Intermediate too. Shortening these days can put many families in financial stress and really be draining for everyone in that family and parents will have a tough time finding someone to transport and care for their young child.

I get that school takes up a lot of time out of everyones day but students should have responsibility to get their homework done and balance their life outside of school. I believe that school should stay the same duration of hours that it is now. As i stated earlier shortening school effects all students and puts families into financial stress and shortening school is very selfish for those struggling as is with school being 8 hours.

Do you think school days should be shortened?

What would you think if our school shortened the days?

  • I think that it would be nice to have shorter school days, but that would lead to various conflicts. Some students who live out of the school district wouldn't be able to get to school if they can't drive. In addition, the school year would be longer because the shortened day wouldn't be enough time to get all of our learning in.

    • I agree, students wouldn't have much of a summer break because of the shorter days would be taking up some of it

  • I think we should make a block schedule so we can have shorter days with a block schedule we can have some classes on one day and get out early so we will get a shorter week than now.

  • I think that school should be shortened a little bit. Like maybe have an early out once a week would be nice. I think that it would be very benifical. But I think that more time out of school would affect our learning and may cause us to stay longer.

    • I agree, being in school for 'shorter' can actually make it go for a longer

  • In my opinion school days shouldn't be shortened. As you said, if days were shorter we will have more school days to make up all those hours. We will also have more homework and less time to do work because teachers would have to teach the same theory in less time. Even I would like to have shorter days, I think it wouldn't help and it would cause more stress for students and teachers.

    • I agree, it brings so much stress among many kids and techers

  • I think that the school day could be shorter, I think that if it is shorter than we should not have to make up more days at school and I think that if our should went shorter day then I would like it because it gives me more time to do stuff in the morning like homework.

    • I don't agree, school shortening could put lots of weight on everyones shoulders

  • I don't think school days should be shorter. I would like it but I don't know if it would help me. I feel we already have to jam a lot of education into one day. Therefore shortening the days would make classes harder.
