Should School be Year-Round?

In the recent decades, the number of schools who use a year-round schedule rather than a 9 months on and 3 months off schedule has been increasing. This alternative to the school year schedule with a summer break was first established in the 1960s. As of 2015, more than 3,500 K-12 schools in the United States have opted for year-round schooling rather than the traditional schedule. These changes have predominantly taken place in school districts located in the south and west of the United States. These schedule changes have been met with backlash and concern from parents, staff, and students.

Although “year-round” is used to describe the different schedule, the school year would still include just the normal 180 days of students being in the classroom and the same number of vacation days. Majority of districts who have made the switch split up the 180 days with longer periods of vacation days throughout the entire year. Some of the most popular schedules are four 45-day periods followed by 15-days off, three 60-day periods with 20 days of break, and two 90-day periods in the classroom followed by two 30-day vacation periods.

Advocates for year-round schooling argue that the pros outweigh the cons so much that it is worth making this big change to the school year schedule. Benefits of year-round schooling include a reduction of learning loss over the summer, nearly year-round childcare for parents of younger students, and longer breaks throughout the year which may eliminate the need for students to miss school for a vacation. Cons of implementing a year-round schooling schedule include, teenagers would not be able to have summer jobs, summer camps would not be able to exist or would have to be shorter, and the change would be costly for school districts.

In my opinion, I would definitely prefer the traditional school schedule with a 3 month summer break over year-round schooling. I feel I would perform better academically with a longer break between school years rather than only a few weeks with the year-round schooling schedule. I don’t think it would be very beneficial to many people as it would be a very big change.

Would you prefer year-round schooling over the traditional schedule? Why or why not?

What do you think the biggest problem with year-round schooling would be?

What do you think the biggest benefit of year-round schooling would be?

  • I would not like if school was year long. If school was all year round I don't think their would be enough breaks for students. The only benefit to year round schooling is that school days could be shorter, but I would still much rather have a long summer break.

  • I don't think school should be year-long. having the time to enjoy the summer and relax is something students need. the stress of school is already so big and we don't need to add more stress with school being year-round.

  • I do not think that school year round would be beneficial for students or teachers. The long summer break is the best option for kids, having school year round would cause a lot of stress with little breaks. Almost all students would want to keep their long summer instead of short breaks all year round, kids would get worn out if it was all year round.

    • I can see some benefits of year-round schoolling, but I agree with you as I think the negatives outweigh the positives.

  • No I wouldn't prefer year round because I enjoy having the whole summer off to reset. The biggest problem with year-round schooling would probably be people being overwhelmed and stressed. The biggest benefit would be you could have longer breaks throughout the school year, and you could maybe graduate sooner.

  • I think that having summer break is better than year round schooling. Personally, I would rather have my break in the summer than throughout the school year. Also, having long breaks while sports and other activities going on won't give many students at true break because they will still have to come into school for meetings, practices, etc.

  • I dont think that all year round school is benificial. I think that if kids go all year round learning they will get tired and then it will affect how they learn and what grades they will get. Every kid needs a break from school and I think how we have it now is fine.

  • I do not think that school should be year round but there are benefits to doing that. One benefit is that each school day would be a whole lot shorter. Personally, I wouldn't like to do this because I want my 2 and a half months off for the summer.

  • I would prefer leaving school the way it is with a summer break. I think that it would be more beneficial because students would have a break to refresh themselves. I think that students would get burnt out if they have year round school. However, I think that having the bigger breaks would be nice.

  • In my opinion I don't think school should be year round. Students are used to having a long summer break that they look forward to every year. So if it were to be taken away I think a lot of students would be frustrated and stressed because we would have much time to ourselves to have a break with no school and not having to worry about school work.
