Should kids drink energy drinks?

An energy drink is a beverage that typically contains large amounts of caffeine, added sugars, and other additives. These drinks are often used by students to provide an extra boost in energy. However, If you drink energy drinks it can have a harmful effect on your nervous system. For teens, 12 to 18, it recommends that they should not exceed 100 milligrams of caffeine a day, according to the CDC. Plus most energy drinks contain 100–300 milligrams of caffeine per serving, although amounts can vary. So drinking and energy drinks  can be bad if they are over 100 mg.

History on energy drinks:  Energy drinks started during 1962 with Lipovitan D by a company named Taisho in Japan. Lipovitan D had extra caffeine and vitamins and was marketed as medicinal tonics. Later, in 1987, Red Bull energy drink was invented. After that many other places began to produce energy drinks.

10,000 to 20,000 kids aged 12 to 17 years went to the emergency room for an energy drink related emergency.

Some of the dangers of energy drinks include:

  • Dehydration
  • Heart complications
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia

I do drink energy drinks and I personally think they are ok for you but if you overdose it can become very harmful and you can possibly die from overdosing.  But I do watch how much caffeine I ingest for the day.

  • I think that drinks like Moster, and Red Bull are considered energy drinks. I do not think that there should be a limit to what age should be able to drink these beverages. Though they may cause health concerns, they do provide nutrience that the body needs to survive. I have seen a video of Monster removing the rust from a metal bar. This does not make it look good for you. But after looking at the nutrience on the bottel, they do not look as bad.

  • Anything with a high does of caffeine that enrgizes you. Kids should not drink energy drinks because if you treat your body right you should not need them. I don't think their needs to be an age restriction because they are not horrible for you but they just aren't good for you.

  • I think any drinks that contain an excess amount of caffine or sugars should be classified as an energy drink. Kids should not be drinking energy drinks because it can do bad things to your body and make your body used to non-natural food items. I think there should be a age restriction on energy drinks (16)

    • I agree that 16 is a good age if it every got restricted but it would kind of affected me because I drink energy drinks.

  • Any drinks like Monster, Red bull, even Alani are considered energy dirnks, and also Ghost and Celsius.  Kids shouldn't be drinking energy drinks because it may harm their health and get complications along the way, it's almost like a drug when consuming an energy drink. I think kids under 14 shouldn't drink energy drinks since they are still developing, also since they have more energy to do things.

  • I think that any drink designed to give you a burst of energy through not natural levels of a drug like caffine should be considered an energy drink. If an age restriction is ever implemented, any amount of caffine ingested by a childed under the age of 14 should be monitored by the parent or guardian.

  • I think that if a kid is healthy (ex. no heart problems), than they should be able to drink energy drinks. That being said, either the kid or an adult should moniter how much caffeine and sugar the kid gets. If there is/will be an age restriction, nobody under the age of 13 would be a good one.

    • I agree that the parents should monitor whether or not there are kids who are drinking energy drinks because they could drink more than 100 mg which is really bad.
