Should 3D-Printed Guns Be allowed?

What are 3D-printed guns? 3D printed guns are privately-made guns that can either be bought as a kit or assembled by using a 3D printer and other accessories. 3D-printed guns have nicknames called “ghost guns” since they have no serial number and have no trace of being bought. US lawmakers are concerned about these guns since anyone can make or purchase a kit without undergoing required checks. The White House also mentions that law enforcement is struggling since most weapons are unmarked and can’t be traced to the owners.

These 3D-printed guns have been in the news for quite some time. On October 2019 an attack in Germany happened and later media coverage reported that the gunman was using a 3D-printed gun. Also in 2016 in Queensland, Australia a drug raid occurred, and they found a 3D-printed submachine gun. After all of this government agencies and companies are trying to reduce and regulate them. Then the Bureau of Industry and Security started to use the export administration regulations restrictions on printed guns since they were taken off the US Munitions List.

Then in 2022, Biden made a final rule which switch the ATF’s definition of a firearm. So 120 days after it gets in the Federal Register. It will get into effect that all firearm manufacturers that buy or build their own guns will need to be marked. Their idea was that if someone commits a crime with a 3D-printed gun they can be identified.

Do You Think 3D-printed guns be allowed?

Do you think that marking parts will prevent crimes?

  • I think that 3-D printed guns should be allowed because I think that all guns are cool and that would be another one to shoot and that would be cool. I think that it wont change anything about crimes because people already have guns and that would just be a new one.

    • I agree because some people make 3D-printed guns just for fun. And they say it is a hobby for them. because you can be creative with them and make whacky designs. plus I agree with you because people already own guns.

  • i feel the 3d printed guns should not be allowed and anyone who purchases them or makes them should get 3 to 4 years or more of jail time as they are illeagle not having a serial number and if they purchase them, then they must be wanting to commite a crime

  • I do think that 3D-printed guns should be allowed as long as the person is doing a good use of it and not hurting anyubody with it. I believe it should be registered just as a normal gun. I don't think that making parts will prevent crimes because people are still going to do whatever they want.

    • I agree with what you said. We should be able to make them. I just think it depends on the person and whether they going to use it for good or bad.

  • No, I don't think that 3D-printed guns should be alloud because anyone can get ahold of those plans and make them with a 3D-printer and no, making parts will not prevent crimes.

  • I think that 3D printed guns should be allowed for people to own. I do not think that marking the parts will prevent crimes. People will still do bad stuff regardless of the labeling on the guns. I also think that the government needs to be less strict with their gun laws. The second amendment says that we have the right to bear arms, so it is not the governments problem.

    • I agree with you because we have the right to bear arms. And we should be able to make 3D-printed guns. because not everyone uses it for bad some people say it is a hobby for them.

  • No, guns' entire purpose of existing is to kill or injure people, and giving people the freedom to create such a dangerous weapon whenever they want will certainly lead to disaster. 3-D printed guns if allowed, at the bare minimum, should have to go through some sort of registration to be allowed to be in someone's home. Creating 3-D printed guns could lead to some issues if used, the gun could be created slightly wrong and turned into a bomb of some sort, so there should be some regulations when creating these guns if they were allowed to be created.

  • I think you should be able to 3d print a gun as long as you get it registered. But if the person making the 3D-printed guns are using the guns for bad things, I think they shouldn't be able to print the guns. I think people are going to do what they want if it is illegal or not.
