New MLB Rules

The MLB has introduced new rules to be enforced during the 2023 season. One of the rules is a ban on defensive shifts.  A defensive shift in baseball is when the players shift to one side of the field in order to better their chances of fielding a ball and making an out.  This is more common in the Major Leagues and collegiate level because they are able to watch films and look at tendencies easier.  Another reason it is not as common in high school baseball is that players are not as consistent in their hitting tendencies. This rule could help some players because they consistently get out because of the shift.

Another new rule coming to the MLB is a pitch timer. The timer will give pitchers 30 seconds to throw a pitch between batters and 15 seconds between each pitch while no runners are on base.  There will be a 20-second pitch timer when there is a runner on base.  They are adding this because they want to speed up the game.  The MLB thinks that it will gain views by speeding up the game.

They are also making the bases bigger.  They are expanding from 15-inch bases to 18-inch bases. They are doing this to make it safer for the base-runner and the fielder.  I have seen that many MLB fans do not like this new rule.  They feel like this will make the game less fun because it gives the baserunner a bigger advantage because there is more area to land or slide into while running.

I am personally not a fan of these new rules. I feel like the MLB is making too many rules too fast. I feel like a lot of baseball fans agree with me. They don’t want the game of baseball to change too fast and too much.

What is your opinion about the new rules of baseball?

Do you think the MLB is righteous to make these rules to gain more money?

Do you think that the players should have a say in the rules?

  • I think you're right they are changing too much too fast and it could make the game less fun. Adding a time limit for pitching could make this a very boring game and eliminate the tension between each pitch. I understand that the MLB wants to make more money faster and gain more watchers, but I think that they are changing things too fast and it's making it a little unfair for everyone else. Some players may think that it is ridiculous to change the rules and change the way they practice, but they might just have to go with it.

    • I agree with you. I hope I am wrong.  I hope that the pitch clock will make the game more fun but I don't think that it will.

  • I think that the players, coaches, and mainly all the teams should be able to say what they think about the rules. I say that because what would happen if a team doesn’t follow some of the rules and if a right hand batter is up they shift to the side that they will most likely hit the ball at.

    • Yes, I agree with you. I think that the teams should have a say in the rules of baseball.  I do not think that it is fair that the players and teams don't have any say in the rules

  • Personally I don't watch very much baseball so these rules don't bug me much. But I do know that people like what they have and normally don't want to change that. So by changing so many rules in so little time I have a feeling that the MLB is going to gain some fans, but in the end make the consistent fans that they have had not very happy.

    • I agree. I think that this will cause the MLB to lose more fans than they gain.  I am not a fan of the new rules.

  • I think the new rules to speed up the game are a big improvement to baseball. As it stands now, MLB games take about 3.5-4 hours from start to beginning, where as NFL games take about 3-3.5 hours. I find it difficult to focus during MLB games as they are slow and take a long time to turn out. Speeding up games can improve viewership and viewer watchtime.

    • I also think that this could affect the players and the way they play the game

    • I see where you are coming from.  In the NFL there is action on every play. In baseball, there is action on limited amounts of plays

  • I think that the players should have a huge say in what the rules are and anything changed about them. The players are the ones playing it, entertaining, making money from it, ect. They are the ones influencing it, so they should be able to have a say.
