New MLB Rules

The MLB has introduced new rules to be enforced during the 2023 season. One of the rules is a ban on defensive shifts.  A defensive shift in baseball is when the players shift to one side of the field in order to better their chances of fielding a ball and making an out.  This is more common in the Major Leagues and collegiate level because they are able to watch films and look at tendencies easier.  Another reason it is not as common in high school baseball is that players are not as consistent in their hitting tendencies. This rule could help some players because they consistently get out because of the shift.

Another new rule coming to the MLB is a pitch timer. The timer will give pitchers 30 seconds to throw a pitch between batters and 15 seconds between each pitch while no runners are on base.  There will be a 20-second pitch timer when there is a runner on base.  They are adding this because they want to speed up the game.  The MLB thinks that it will gain views by speeding up the game.

They are also making the bases bigger.  They are expanding from 15-inch bases to 18-inch bases. They are doing this to make it safer for the base-runner and the fielder.  I have seen that many MLB fans do not like this new rule.  They feel like this will make the game less fun because it gives the baserunner a bigger advantage because there is more area to land or slide into while running.

I am personally not a fan of these new rules. I feel like the MLB is making too many rules too fast. I feel like a lot of baseball fans agree with me. They don’t want the game of baseball to change too fast and too much.

What is your opinion about the new rules of baseball?

Do you think the MLB is righteous to make these rules to gain more money?

Do you think that the players should have a say in the rules?

    • I agree. I think since they are the ones playing the game, they should be able to decide on the rules because they are whom the rules affect.

  • I don't like the new pitch clock that they are going to add. I don't like the idea having a time limit for baseball. I think that these rules will get them more money because more people would watch if it's faster paced. I think the players should have some say in the rules, but limited.

    • I agree with you.  I think that this will make it difficult for the pitcher and the batter. I think that this will limit the offense. Baseball already has limited offense

  • I dont really watch MLB but I do think that their new rules are dumb. I think that they are adding the rules too fast and should be adding them 1 at a time. Overall I think that the rules should be up to if the players want them becasue they are the ones who have to follow them.

    • I agree. I think that these rules will scare away avid baseball watchers.  I am worried about the future of baseball. I hope it still looks the same as it is right now.

  • I think some of these rules are dumb. The bases should just stay the standerized size and not bigger. Most of the calls now will be very controversial due to the bases size. I agree the players should be able to have something to say about the new rules. In my opinion I think this may affect some of the players play.

    • I agree with you.  These rules will affect the players' play.  I hope that there are still good at-bats.  The pitch clock could cause hitters to lose their groove in the box.

  • I don't watch much baseball, but I think it makes sense for the MLB to change the rules for more money, without a bigger income in money, the MLB could struggle in money loss and financial issues. If the players don't like the new rules then they should be able to speak to someone about their thoughts and opinions on the new rules.

    • I disagree.  I don't think that these rules will help gain revenue for the MLB.  I think that this will make them lose watchers.

  • I think the rules should have been implemented with the player's wants in mind. They are probably changing and making rules in order to up profits which is understandable, but MLB should have made sure they were agreeable to everyone before putting them in place.
