Fishermen Faced With a Challenging Decision

Just recently at Lake Vygozero in Russia, fishermen were faced with the decision to save two bear cubs that were left by their mother in the middle of this lake. The mother of the two cubs was trying to cross the ice when it became too thin and they all fell thru. The mother could not swim with the cubs on her back so she had to leave them. That is when some fishermen spotted the cubs and decided to save them. As the bear cubs thrashed around in the water, the fishermen made their way over to them on their boat. As the bears clung to the boat the fishermen searched for something to get the bears up into the vessel. They found a net and quickly took action by scooping the cubs up and bringing them into the boat. The exhausted fishermen then took the bear cubs to an island where they could be reunited with their mother. To read more click here.

1. If you were these fishermen would you have taken action? If so why?

If I were a fisherman in this situation and I encountered this I would have taken action, but I would have made sure that the momma bear was not around to attack me.

2. What would you do once the bears were on board?

I would probably call a game warden or someone that knows how to deal with these types of situations.

  • I agree with you I would call a game warden, the police, or a DNR about this situation with the bear cubs. I would take action to save these bear cubs becuase they deserve a reason to live and it is not their fault that they were left at the place they were.

    • That is a good idea. If you dont want to go and try to save the bears yourself calling the DNR or police would be a good idea. I also think that the bears have a right to live and they dont want to suffer. If we were the bears, we wouldn't want to suffer and would want help.

    • I agree those bears were in a bad situation because their mother had not yet taught them to swim. Because of this, they would die if someone did not step up and take action to save them from the freezing waters. It's also a good idea to call someone to make sure everything is taken care of, and that they are back with their mother.

  • If I were the fisherman I would try my best and do what I could to get the cubs out of the ice water and get them with their mother. If this did happen I would make sure that I was careful around the momma bear to make sure that she didn't attack me. Once the bears were on board I would make sure that I was careful around them and not make any serious movements and try to get them to the island.

    • I agree with you that it would be good to not make any sudden movements. That is a good point because if you did they may think you are trying to attack them, and they may be ready to defend themselves. The momma bear might also be angry even if you are saving their lives because she might not know it.

  • I agree with what you say about the momma bear being around but if the cubs are in the water and they can't swim there going to drown.

i would call like the game warren or someone that knows what to do with wildlife so that you or whoever doesn't get charged or attacked

    • Yeah, I agree that if I was in that situation that you would have to hurry so the bears don't drown, but you also will have to wait a little bit so that the momma bear would get far enough away, so she wouldn't turn back and attack you.

  • If I were the fisherman, I would do anything I could to help the bears. If it wasn't physically possible to do by myself then I would call anyone to come and help. I wouldn't just leave them to drown. Once the bears were on board, I would call someone who would know what to do with them and make sure they get somewhere safe.

    • Thats what I would do too. I would first try my best to help them but I dont think I would be strong enough to help out. Calling someone would be a good idea, as they would know what to do in these situations. I would most like call a DNR or animal rescue.

    • I agree that if I wasn't able to rescue the bears I would call someone else to help me. In the meantime, while I was waiting for someone to come and help I would get something under the bears like a rope of a net to help the bears survive until help arrives.
