Are your kids as safe as you think?

I was watching the Tyra Show today and they did a "test" on how safe kids are with guns or lighters.  They placed four kids under the age of 7 in a room with a couch and some boxes.  In a box was an unloaded gun and a lighter and there were other random things in the boxes.  It took the kids less than 30 minutes to find the gun and lighter, but the kids had been taught well and they put them back.

They then placed a child actor in the room and he "found" the gun and lighter but started pointing them at the kids.  He then put it back, but the 3 year old got curious and got the gun out again.  Then the 4 year old started pulling the trigger at the kids.  They were fighting over who would get to play with the gun.

I just wanted to know your thoughts on how safe kids really are because you might think your kid is safe at your house because you dont have any guns, but what if they go to a friends house.  You dont know if they have guns or something around the house.  What do you think?

  • well i guess they fell into peer pressure real quick then.
  • if you were really trying to protect your kids you wouldnt have those things lying around anyways.
  • if the parents have dangerous things they should make sure they have them locked up and hidden where the kids don't know where they are.
  • kids just do what they see. thats how they learn. i learned that an outlet it not a keyhole and a locket is not a key to unlock an outlet.. the hard way.
  • That's really interesting! I bet a lot of viewers started having second thoughts about where to put their dangerous objects at. I think parents should also teach their children what the dangerous stuff looks like that they don't have so that they can be sure they aren't messing around with it in other places they go.
  • It's really about how the parents educate the kids. If the just say, "no that's bad," I doubt it'll really stick with the kids. If they sit them down multiple tiimes though and talk to them about everything from how their day was to sex, drugs, and weapons then it'll make a more lasting impression on them.
  • wow thats really something.
  • Im sorry but Kids will do that with anything dangerous or not. It is the parents responsibility to put gun locks and child locks on hazardous items and such.
  • thats crazy but the trigger on a loaded gun is probably too hard for a little kid to pull.
  • yeahh, you shouldnt have dangerous stuff laying out when there are young ones running around.
