Are eBooks better than printed books?

Nowadays there are many different ways to read a book, starting in 1455 with the Gutenberg Bible, being the first printed book ever. Over the years we have experienced different types of books, digital types or traditional ones. The first ebook ever created was done by Michael S. Hart in 1971 digitizing the U.S. Declaration of Independence. As in traditional books, there are many different types and brands of ebooks. The most known is Kindle, first made in 2007 by the Amazon company. Since then, kindles have been a huge success being sold all over the world and making good profit from them. In 2012 Amazon made $565 million just with Kindles. As well as printed books have developed over the years, ebooks have developed too. Ebooks are not just kindles, ebooks are every digital format of a book such as PDF, EPUB, etc.

There are some pros of reading an ebook. They help with the environment because they don’t require cutting down trees for producing the paper, they can be read many different books in the same device, the price of buying a new book is a lot cheaper (most of them being between $2 and $15) and sometimes you can even find them for free. Finally, it is easier for authors to publish books online than going through the process of sending it to the editorial, having the approval, printing it and at the end, selling it to stores. This may also be better for unknown or new authors so everybody can have access to their books.

On the other hand, there are some cons about ebooks. Many readers like the feel of touching the paper that printed books have. Digital books are read on a screen and even though they are made in a different way so they don’t damage your eyes, they are still harmful and can affect your vision. To end with, some readers admit that not seeing the cover of the book every day as in printed books, may end up not knowing what book they are reading.

According to research, many experts agree that ebooks are not worth in 2022 but I personally think they are. There are many types and platforms where to find them, resulting in a lot cheaper or even free. Ebooks help with the environment and are easier to carry around with you.

Do you prefer ebooks or printed books?

Do you think there will be no more printed books in the future?

    • I agree with you. Ebooks are a lot more sustainable and help the environment.

  • I personally prefer printed books because it is easier to focus on printed books over ebooks. I think it will change to only ebooks in the future because trees are becoming scarce. Also because ebooks are starting to take off since more people are starting to use them.

  • In my opinion, I prefer regular books over ebooks just because I stay more focused when I am readinga regular book rather than an ebook. I do understand why people like the convenience of ebooks. I like that they are a lot less bulky than a regular book, and the are less harmful to the environment.

    • I agree that eBooks are less harmful to the environment and like that too.

  • in my opinion, it depends on the person, some people like ebooks more than paper books, personally I like paper books better but I'm not against reading an ebook. it depends on my mood. printed books don't have a bright light that can give you a headache. so more often than not ill choose printed books over ebooks.

    • I agree that it depends on the person and there is the posibility of both to adapt to people's likes.

  • I don't really care what books I read. Personally, I hate reading books. I would rather do something that doesn't involve reading words. I would probably like to read printed books instead though. To conclude, it doesnt really matter what form of book I read.

  • I prefer printed books more than ebooks. I prefe printed books more than ebooks because they don't hurt my head as much. Also staring at a screen can hurt your eyes and give you many health issues. Not only can it give you health problems but it can also be very tempting to change tabs and play a game or do something else when you're on a computer. I think there will be more way ebooks in the future because of how tons of things are changing to online and electric now.

  • i feel that printed books are better as reading a book like a hard copy book is way better than hearing a book or reading it off the computer. i feel printed books will stay forever or however long til the earth stops spinning or comes to its inevitble death.

  • I think that ebooks are better for the environment and easier. I think that it would be easier if you are going on a long vacation over the whole summer and like to read it will just take up space to bring books especially if you like to read more than one at once. I also feel that for me personally I will not read for enjoyment out of an ebook if I am reading for enjoyment I prefer my books at home. I also like my books at home because most of them have been gifted to me or were just a quarter so I like normal books more. But teachers might be able to take advantage of ebooks if they can just send it out for the kids to have on their computers, making it easier on teacher.
