Would you rather have longer days but less days, or shorter days with more days? That’s the question that many schools have been asking themselves at the start of this school year. One school in Independence Missouri starts their school weeks on tuesdays. But they aren’t alone in this 4 day school week, lots of schools have started doing a 4 day school week instead of 5 days. But it does come at a price. These schools are doing longer school days as opposed to an 8 hour school day with a 5 day school week.
There are definitely some benefits of a 4 day school week. Think about it, your school week is shorter. This means that you have one day less of homework, of classes, of school overall. And if you do have homework, this gives you an extra day to do it without having the extra stress of doing it during the school day. This also benefits the teachers, it can be a selling point for teachers who are on the fence about going to teach somewhere. And in a world where we are currently in a teacher shortage, schools need teachers. So why not help the teachers and the students by going to a 4 day school week.
Now we already know what a 5 day school week looks like, 7 hour days of 5 days. But what are some benefits of a 5 day school week? Some studies have shown that after having a 4 day school week for a couple of years, some students have had problems with their progress in learning. Versus students who have maintained a 5 day school week have kept up with their learning progress. Doing this can also affect the elementary students in the school. By having a 4 day school week the elementary student’s sleep schedules can get messed up. And by doing this, they can be tired during the 4 days they are in school. But when asking the parents they overwhelmingly said they preferred the 4 day school week. So… Which would you rather have??
I would rather do a 5 day school week with shorter days. By doing a 4 day week kids aren’t getting as much learning out of it. And why would we go to school not to learn. If we’re going to spend years of our lives doing something I would rather it be productive. Another reason I would rather do a 5 day school week is it keeps it consistent. I like to have a schedule and stick to that. And by having a 4 day school week half of our time would be doing things that could hurt the 4 days we are in school.
Which would you want, 4 day school weeks or 5 days?
Would you rather have Mondays or Fridays off if Harlan went to a 4 day school week?
What would you do on your day off if you had a 4 day school week?

If I were to choose, I would rather do 4 days of school a week. It wouldn't take away any learn because the days would be slightly longer, which would make it even out the time we would miss with one less day. I think fridays would be better off because you can start the week off strong and on time, but end it a little earlier.
I would rather have 5 days and a shorter schedule because it keeps you working up until the end of the week. I would rather have fridays off because that is when people go to football games. If I had a day off, I would catch up on school work.
That's a good point, if you have Fridays off you can do more with your weekend because instead of a 2 day weekend you get a 3 day weekend. I agree I would probably catch up on school work, but if I didn't I would probably hang out with friends.
For me I would personally have Fridays off. Starting the school week off can be rough, but every week you look forward to having friday off which i see as an advantage. Although people would love to have Mondays off, I dislike it because it always throws the whole week off and it makes going to school even more rough.
I think that Fridays being off would be an advantage. I agree that Mondays off would be great, but then if you think about it Tuesday would just become the new monday. And if you think about the weekend having Friday as apart of the weekend sounds pretty great to me.
I love the sound of having 4 days of school a week but I think the best decison for me would have to be 5 days of school a week. If we are only in school 4 days a week thats not a lot of learning I think many need more then one day to understand some of the school material. I would also rather go 5 days a week consistant than have the week cut short.
I think that a 4 day school week sounds like a fun idea, but like you I would like to stick to the 5 day school me for me personally. I feel like I would benefit the most this way. I would also want to be consistant then cut the week shorter.
