The Big Blog Topic for this week was to watch another World War II Movie. Nick Petsche and I watched Flags of our Fathers.
In the beginning of the movie, it shows a soldier running and shows him in fear, and then it goes to the present to an older man shaking and scared. Then he started talking about how people do not know about war and they think that they do. He just falls to the ground and a priest comes to his rescue. It shows a picture of the famous soldiers raising the flag in Iwo Jima. The picture that is shows is my first picture that I have in my Blog. This picture turned everyone so that they believed the United States would win the war. Most people thought that this picture was such a big deal and how it was idolized by everyone. It was on the front page of just about every newspaper in the United States. It then goes to a date earlier in the war, showing a United States soldier stabbing a Japanese soldier to save an injured American’s life. The soldiers in a camp play a dirty joke on a fellow soldier, that I can not tell you because it is really bad. They soldiers get told of a plan to take over Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. A soldier falls off a boat and nobody stops to get him. That soldier drowns. It shows the soldiers on the boat in the sleeping quarters and then you see them all jump up and run to the top of the boat and see the ships shooting their guns and unloading onto the islands. Then they show them watching in aw as the ships shoot their guns at the island. Most of them think that they are lucky to be first off the ship, but really they are most likely to be the first to die on the island. One of the soldiers shows some of the soldier’s playing cards a picture of what the Japanese do to POW’s. They all get quiet and realize that it would be a bad idea to show the Japanese a white flag in surrender. They might as well fight to the end.
They storm the island and they do not get shot at by any of the Japanese because they are hiding in spider holes across the island and they wait to shot until there are a lot of soldiers to be killed. The Americans do not know what hit them and they begin to freak out about the whole ordeal. Everyone does not know what to do and they end up in a jumbled mess on the outskirts of the landing zone on the island. The Japanese are killing the American Soldiers by the hundreds after they start firing and they end up blowing up some American tanks and some American ships. After they storm Iwo Jima, they are just trying to get some land to create an area where more soldiers can land on the island. They flag raisers on the picture are shipped back to the states minus one of the soldiers who did because he did not want to go back to the states; he wanted to continue fighting for the U.S. in the war. Three of the six soldiers that raised the flag on Iwo Jima were shown and were honored at the New York Yankees baseball game. Three soldiers believed that one of the Golden Mothers should not be part of the ceremony because that mother’s son did not raise the flag on the island. They take shots, as in alcohol; on the train that they are riding for fun and they also are trying to raise money so that they war can continue. They other men were killed after they put up the replacement flag on day five of the war. The speeches that they give were to honor the initial flag putter upper people because they did the real work, unlike the replacement flag that was put up. They then have yet another flash back during the movie, after they are shown with a piece of cake and was covered in strawberry coverings that looked like blood. It goes back and shows a line up of dead American soldiers and then the whole thing went back to the Iwo Jima raid again. This shows the soldiers here to and the runner telling more soldiers about the advance.
Then it goes back to the presentations and the replacement flag putters giving there speeches here. These Golden Mothers show the soldiers compassion and how they also learn about what the Golden Mothers are going through. One of the Golden Mothers asks if her son is on a certain spot on the picture, and the sailor says it is. Then yet again another flashback to the Iwo Jima raid happens, and it shows the Indian guy watching a fellow marine kill and beat some of the Japanese soldiers. Then they show the soldiers at the top setting up the American Flag at the top of the mountain. The soldiers at the bottom are cheering and then some Japanese soldiers are shown being shot at and the Americans shoot and kill all of the Japanese soldiers that are shooting at them. They run a telephone line to the top of the mountain after the flag has been set up and a perimeter on top and more soldiers run to the top. They take down the first flag that was set up by “Captain’s Orders” and then they put of the bigger more prominent flag. Nobody saw the putting up of the second flag. When they saw the picture, everyone made up their own story about it and they also thought that. The Indian guy made a big fit at a bar because the bartender would not serve him. He took a chair into the streets and was swinging it around. The cops were trying to disarm him and he would not let go of the chair. His naval buddy came to his rescue and then they got him to try and get his drunkenness to the top of a paper mashie mountain. The Indian guy only did it because he was drunk and he had no other option. There is another flashback to the invading of Iwo Jima. This flashback shows the men going into a spider hole and seeing Japanese soldiers that blew themselves up with grenades because they did not want to face the Americans in war any longer. The Three Flag raisers were flashbacking to the moments when they saw the three other men that raised the flag and how those three men were killed in the raid of Iwo Jima. These flashbacks were during the fake flag raising ceremony. The Indian guy asks to see his mother before he got sent back to Iwo Jima and he was mad because he did not get to see his mother.
Personal Thoughts and Opinions:
I really enjoyed this movie is represented everything that I did not know about the raid of Iwo Jima. This movie was very interesting and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good, time consuming, and war type video. This movie was really amazing and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I thought that it was super and I would watch it again in a heart beat! I though that they did a really good job with the graphics and I also thought that they depiction of people and how they did a lot of the stuff that was actually going on at that time in the United States during World War II.
