WW II Blog #2

Intro: The Big Blog Topic for this week is to watch another World War II movie. Austin Euchner, Nick Petsche, and I watched Saving Private Ryan because none of us have seen is before. This movie is about four brothers, whom three of which are dead when they storm the Omaha beach in France. One brother is alive and he is stuck inside enemy lines and eight fellow soldiers put their lives at risk to try and save this one soldier so his mother has at least one son after the war is over. The men are ordered to find Private Ryan and they can not stop unless they are killed. The men do not think that it is fair but they have to follow through with the mission anyways. This movie is 2 hours and 48 minutes long, but it is so worth it now that I have seen it!

Private Ryan was parachuted in through the 101st airborne division, 15 miles inside Normandy. If Private Ryan is alive they are going to get him out of France. Another man believes that the eight men that they are going to be sending will be killed in action just like Private Ryan, because he thinks that he is dead also. Then Captain Miller reassigns a Corporal, who speaks German and French, to his party so they can go find Private Ryan. The men that are going to find Private Ryan think that this is a suicide mission. They think that Private Ryan is across a town that the German army split in two, that formed tow army mixed divisions in this town. They sniper kills the German sniper in the tower by shooting him through his scope when the German is about to shoot him. When a soldier sits on a board, another board falls and knocks over a wall which reveals six to ten German Soldiers and this causes them to argue before more American Soldiers shoot and kill all the German Soldiers. Then they find a Private Ryan and tell him that his brothers are dead. His brothers are fine and they found the wrong Private Ryan. They are going to wait three hours and then take off after dark. The leading Lieutenant tells them that what they are doing is a good idea and that he has brothers too. He wishes them good luck on their mission to find Private James Francis Ryan. Captain Miller lost 94 men since the beginning of his command.

Captain Miller says that he hopes Private Ryan is worth the trouble they are going though to find him. The plane that flew the paratroopers crashed because they put metal plates trying to keep one man safe, just one man. That killed 22 men when the plane crashed just because they were trying to keep a Brigadier General safe, he was one of the 22 men killed in the crash. When they got to the plane crash area, they search the areas dog tags to see if he was killed, but they do not find any with Private Ryan’s name. Then Captain Miller begins to ask around and they ask a soldier who is pretty much deaf, because of a grenade, if he knows Private Ryan. They find Private Ryan, the actual Private James Francis Ryan, and tell him that all of his brothers are dead. He begins to cry and tell him that he is going with them to take him home. He believes that he will not be forced to leave his position over-watching that bridge. He does not want to leave until at least reinforcements arrive. Private Ryan says that everyone fought as hard as him and he tells them to tell his mother that he is with the only brothers that he has left and he does not want to leave them. Saving Private Ryan was the one decent thing that they pulled out of this entire war was something that Sergeant Horvath said while talking to Captain Miller.

They make sticky-bombs to make a 60 ton road block out of a tank or two. They place a sniper in the bell tower to give them some helping fire. Sticky-bombs are compound B stuffed inside a sock with a simple fuse covered in axel grease. This will blow the tracks off a tank allowing it to become a 60 ton road block. If they do not succeed then the last person across the bridge will blow the bridge up. They talk about stuff and then they are attacked by the Germans at the bridge they are defending. There is 2 Tiger Tanks, 2 Panther tanks and 50 or more infantry. The Bell Tower people load the machine gun and the sniper and prepare for battle. They all sit and wait for the moment to fire. The decoy was two men on a tracked motorcycle and they hope that they took the bait. They took the bait and now the battle is begun. A soldier kills himself because he does not get away from the sticky- bomb in time. The tank misses its first shot. They blow off the tanks track with two sticky-bombs. It can no longer move and is stuck on the bridge. A 20 MM gun kills all the men that stormed the tank. Private Ryan is almost killed but is saved at the last second. The sniper and the 50 caliber machine gunner that were in the bell tower were killed by the tank. They are getting killed by the 20 MM machine gun literally and they try to flank it. The Corporal does not shoot the German soldier when he gets the chance after the German kills two American Soldiers. They threw mortars because they did not have a tube to shoot them through. Captain Miller gets shot going for the detonator, but he gets back up and pulls out his pistol for a last chance shot or two. While the Captain is shooting at the tank, American planes blow up the tank. Then reinforcements show up right after the battle is almost over to help but it is too late Captain Miller dies and Private Ryan lives.

Personal Thoughts and opinions:

Saving Private Ryan was a really good movie even though it was really long. I enjoyed it except for a part right in the middle in which our DVD skipped. I enjoyed it when the movie showed Private Ryan in the fetal position, I laughed. I liked how the movie went from the now back to the past and then it shows them back at the graveyard and how Private James Francis Ryan talking to Captain Miller’s grave. This movie was totally worth the 2 hours and 48 minutes that I wasted on this Sunday afternoon watching. I like World War II movies because they show what our grandparents may have gone though or what our great grandparents went through to give us what we have today and I respect all those men and women who go into the armed forces to serve and protect our freedom.
