The Gulf War was fought between Iraq and allies of Kuwait. It started on January 16th and lasted until February 28, 1991. Overall it lasted 44 days. There are many reasons why Iraq attacked Kuwait. One of them was that Iraq has never really accepted Kuwait as a state. Also there are many tensions over the rights of underground oil resources. Iraq claimed that Kuwait was using resources that were on the Iraqi side of the border. Iraq said that during the time before August 2, 1990 it was Kuwait’s fault for reducing oil prices, this lead to economic problems for Iraq. This was such a big deal because Iraq does not have any other fairly large export product. It makes sense to believe that the attack on Kuwait was Saddam Husain’s way of trying to win some land after the Iran and Iraq war. It’s obvious that Iraq thought that they would claim Kuwait as its territory and they never thought that an allied force would fight back. The most important reason for the war against Iraq was that neighboring oil producing countries were scared that Iraq could move forward on them if Iraq wasn’t stopped in Kuwait. Kuwait actually asked us to come and help them remove Iraq from their country.
I think that it’s good that we went and helped Kuwait and stabilized the area. Helping Kuwait helped oil prices from sky rocketing. If we would have removed Saddam Husain while our troops were there we might not of had to go back in and get him like we did after 9/11.
