Not only was George Washington a member of the federalist party, George was also known as a hero. Both federalists and anti-federalists thought it was an obvious choice for George to be the first president of our nation. He was unanimously elected by 69 of the electors. Vice president for George Washington was his runner up, John Adams, in 1789. Washington was reelected in 1792, and again runner up John Adams remained vice president.
Washington did not run a third time to be the president of the United States. He then retired to Mount Vernon, where his family lived. He was asked again to be the American commander if the United States went to war with France over the XYZ affair. However, that never happened and therefore he did not have to serve. Washington died on December 14, 1799, possibly from a streptococcal infection of his throat.George Washington has a great historical significance. He led the Continental Army to victory over the British Army. He greatly influenced the nation by believing in a strong, federal government during his eight years in office. He refused to be treated like royalty. By declining a third year in office, he set up the precedent of a two-term limit.George relied on a cabinet for advice. He was able to stop the first real challenge to federal authority with the growth of the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. Pennsylvania farmers were refusing to pay a tax and he was the one who sent troops to ensure agreement. Washington was a huge in the idea of neutrality. In 1793 he declared the Proclamation of Neutrality.In 1795, Pinckney's Treaty helped relations with Spain by creating a boundary between the United States and the Spanish. After that, the US was allowed to travel the entire Mississippi for the purpose of trade. In the end, George Washington should be considered one of our most important and influential presidents of all time whose legacy still lives on today.
