Although people had a different perspective on him thinking that he was wealthy of Southwestern gas and oil interests. After people started thinking that he moved a little to the left on some domestic issues. In order to demonstrate that he was a very resourceful Senate leader he set his main focus on civil rights laws. He stayed a sectional candidate and the presedential nomination when to John F. Kennedy. In result he chose Lyndon B. Johnson as his running mate to balance the Democratic ticket. In 1960 they defeated the republican candidates Richard M. Nixon and Henry Cabot Lodge. He was selected by Kennedy to supervise the President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunities. As vice-president he also took upon some missions overseas which offered him some limited wisdom into international problems. The assassination of Kennedy on November 22, 1963 raised Johnson to the White House where he quickly proved that he was an encouraging leader in the dapartment of domestic affairs.
