Why Invade Kuwait?- Kuwait had a large amount of oil and wanted to spread Iraqi power in the region. Iraq also owed a large debt to Kuwait.
US/UN Response- UN calls for Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait, UN puts worldwide ban on trade with Iraq and Iraq responds by annexing Kuwait. The US and NATO sends soldiers to Saudi Arabia to defer an attack on Saudi Arabia. Sending troops to Saudi Arabia was known as Operation Desert Shield. UN authorizes the use of force against Iraq if they didn't leave Kuwait.
US/NATO/Arabic countries that were anti-Iraq- 700,000 troops compared to Iraq's 300,000. 540,000 were made up of US forces
Iraq refused to withdraw from Kuwait despite being outnumbered. Allies in Saudi Arabia launched a massive aerial attack on Iraq called Operation Desert Storm.
Operation Desert Storm- first active combat in the war in the Persian Gulf. US-led air attack on Iraq and Iraqi Occupied Kuwait. Destroyed parts of the governing structure of Iraq.
Operation Desert Storm- Kuwait was liberated by US and Arabic forces. Iraq was also invaded from Saudi Arabia.
February 28- President Bush declares ceasefire because Iraqi forces had been destroyed. They lost due to being so outnumbered by our forces and Saddam's refusal to admit defeat.
Iraq- total destruction of military. Deaths ranged from 8000-100,000. US deaths-300 and minimal damages to military

Iraq's Rebellion- Hussein's forces brutally suppressed uprisings to overthrow the government. US and British aircraft patrolled the skies. Iraq tried to stop the UN from doing weapons inspections. Resulted in a short resumption of hostilities in 1998 and refused any weapons inside the countries.
Aftermath- UN considered it a success even though by 2003 we were at war with Iraq again. In 2002, US sponsored the UN to restart inspecting Iraq's weapons. US and Britain gathered forces on Iraq's borders. US said that if Saddam Hussein didn't step down from power and leave Iraq in 48 hours by March 17,2003, another war would be declared. This started the Iraq War (2003).

Fighting ISIS- US has been assisting the Iraq Security Forces. When armies see ISIS fighters and can't fight back they call in airstrikes. Raqqa, capital of ISIS was freed by the US and Kurdish/Syrian Rebels.
