Imperialism- Extending a countries power and influence through Diplomacy. Stronger building takes over a weaker country. (Great Britain) (Causes of World War I & II)
Diplomacy- How the US officially deals with other countries (trying to settle peacefully instead of war)
Militarism- Building up your military. It can be used to get points across. (protects their interest or take over other countries)
Nationalism- Loyalty to a nation. Putting one country above each other. Patriotism
Sphere of influence- Bully country. when a country has unofficial authority over another country. overpowering. bigger (Latin America)
Protectorate- Stronger nation controls or protects a weaker nation (Cuba)
Arbitration- Settlement or dispute by a neutral party
Old Diplomacy- deal with other countries (late 1790 - late 1800's)
1. Noninterventionist - the US did not intervene in foreign affairs, especially Europe's. (not wanting to get involved)
2. Isolationist- The US acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations (not getting with allies)
3. Passive and Reactive- the US waited for events to occur and then acted accordingly
4. Weak Army and Navy- not aggressive
George Washington warned US that we should focus on America. Stay out of European problems. Set in place Old Diplomacy.

1. Imperialistic -going out and conquering territory to create an empire (Aflred Mahan, Henry Cabot Lodge, Teddy Roosevelt

By 1900, Spain was a dwindling empire- Philippines, Guam, Cuba, Puerto Rico and a few colonies in Africa (Morocco and Western Sahara)
The US had been interested in Cuba for a long time -US tried to buy Cuba in 1854
Cubans had been revolting against Spain frequently (1868, 1878, 1886, 1895) wanting independence
Newspaper (Yellow Press) reported the brutality of the Spanish General Weyler -Americans newspapers were clearly pushing the nation towards intervention in the Cuban situation. - New York Journal reports "blood on the roadsides, blood in the villages, blood, blood, blood! William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer
