THURSDAY- talked about girl's education, went over the powerpoint, people presented their god, watched video

Islands, water 

didn't have great farmland (to started trading and dominating)

Geography of Greece 

-small country in Europe

-the main part of Greece in on a peninsula 

Greece is surrounded by what three large bodies of water? Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea

The rest of Greece is made up of islands -6000

Importance of Geography to Greece? Sea - travel, food, trading, didnto live on the land but around it 

Mountains over 75% of Greece

Due to mountains, transportation over land was difficult

Greeks didn't have much fertile land for agriculture 

Due to these issues, ancient Greece never had a large population no more than a few million 

These issues might have led some leaders to look to expand (Alexander the Great)

2 major states

Athens & Sparta city state

Ancient Olympics 

-records of Olympics date to 776 BC and lasted until 393 AD when the Romans ended them

-lasted one day at first but eventually extended to five days

-happened ever 4 years (Olympiad)

-started as a tribute to Zeus 

-showed up again in 1896 in Athens, Greece

Olympic Legend 

- Hercules who first called the games "olympic" and established the custon of holding them every four years (God of Sports)

-After Hercules completed his twelce labors (capture, steal, slay) he built the Olympic Stadium in honor to Zeus

-Following his completion, Hercules walked in a straight line for 200 steps and called this distance a "stadion
