Jazz, sports, radio, dance, illegal drinking, hairstyles, fashion, movie theatres, boxing

Flapper- girls who had feathery dresses, fancy outfits, nice headbands/hats/feathers, jewelry, farming

WEDNESDAY- go over presentations

THURSDAY- go over presentations

FRIDAY-

Charles Darwin- people came from monkeys then evolved from them

The Scopes Monkey Trial- 

-In 1925, Tennessee passed the first law making it illegal to teach evolution in school

-The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said it would defend any teacher willing to break the law

-John Scopes, biology teacher from Dayton, accepted

-Scopes taught evolution and was arrested

-Clarence Darrow was hired by the ACLU to defend Scopes

-William Jennings Bryan was the special prosecutor

-Scopes did not deny teaching evolution

-Trail was really about evolution in schools

-Darrow called Bryan to the stand ans asked him questions abou the Bible

-Darrow made Bryan look foolish

Buying on Credit- "buy now, pay later" stock market was booming, buying on margin, turned into massive debt

High Tariff Policy-

tariff- tax on inported goods

companies kept loosing money, stock market kept going up

The Era of "Permanent Prosperity"

Cult of Domesticity

-Developed throughout the 1800's

-Ideal of womanhood had four characteristics

1. Piety -make sure their kids go to church, pray everyday

2. Purity -saving yourself for marriage

3. Domesticity -take care of kids, clean the home, cook food

4. Submissiveness -you take his name

Women took men's job in WWI showing the country that they could do hard work

19th Amendant- Women's right to vote

Maragaret Sanger- 1921 founded the American Birth Control League -Today known as Planned Parenthood

-Women were then able to control their own bodies

-This movement educated women about exsisting birth control methods

-Gave women more options

By 1928, 39% of college degrees given in the United States (1900 19%) Almost 60%
