Monday (12-5-16)- Chapter 10- America Claims an Empire (Cartoon- US is expanding taking over islands)

Domestic Policy vs Foreign Policy

  • Imperialism- Building and taking over islands and smaller countries. A strong country going in and taking over smaller countries.
  • Diplomacy- How countries officially deal with other countries.
  • Militarism- Building up your military making it stronger.
  • Nationalism- You think your country is better than the others and you are racist towards the people that aren't in your country.
  • Sphere of Influence- A strong country takes over a smaller country and makes it a sphere of influence you will have a lot of control over that country. Having a lot of strings attached not taking it all over but having some control over it.
  • Protectorate- Same as the Sphere of influence but smaller countries
  • Arbitration- settlement of a dispute by a third party. (Teddy Roosevelt)

Old Diplomacy - How we used to deal with countries around the world. late 1780's-1900's

  • Non interventionist- We didn't get involve we stayed out of it. (Europe- Far away and they were always at war)
  • Isolationist- The US acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations. ]
  • Passive and Reactive- The US waited for events to occur and then acted accordingly.
  • Weak army and navy.
  • Policy of isolationism- This is all called.

New Diplomacy-

  • Imperialistic- Going out and conquering territory to create and empire.
  • Empire- Alfred Mahan, Henry Cabot Ladge, Teddy Roosevelt
  • Roosevelt- Stronger army and navy
  • Interventionist- Becoming more involved in other countries affairs. Monroe Doctrine- Warning to European countries to stay out of the Western Hemisphere. If you come back we will militarily come back.
  • Strong Nationalism- Having strong pride and confidence in ones country.

Cartoon- teddy Roosevelt- this is an example of new diplomacy. Come to us we will settle it for you.

Tuesday (12-6-16)-Mr. Bruns continues to present to us.

Cartoon- All the major powers of the world were saying what can we take over. Countries were competing.

Why did the US and other countries look to imperialism

  • The western frontier was settled- 1890- we started looking outside the US. The West was our colony then we started taking islands around the world.
  • Brings military power and prestige to your country.
  • $$$$- For natural resources as well as opening new markets to sell your goods (trade).
  • Belief in cultural superiority- White Man's Burden- It was the white mans responsibility ("President McKinley: to take them all and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them")- Taft- "We must help our "our little brown brothers" on the Philippines".

Cartoon- The white kids are in the back and they are behaving and the black kids are in the front and they mis behaving.

Bought it from Russia- Alaska 7.2 million. They thought it was a stupid buy and it was for military reasons it was all snow and cold and ice. But there was a lot of people that thought we would take all of Canada.

Cartoon- Stupid a bunch of ice John Bull he is like the representative and he looks very concerned and he thinks we are going to take over all of Canada.

She thinks that her brother is giving too much into this. She was trying to get more power to the Hawaiians.  But these white plantation owners told military to come in and they wired Grover Cleveland and said go head and Unix Hawaii and he didn't like it cause he didn't give permission and he refused. We forced out way in for money reasons.
