On the morning of September 11, 2001 at 8:46 A.M. the World Trade Center, also known as the Twin Towers, was attacked by terrorists. 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger jet airlines and crashed two of them into the Twin Towers intentionally. This resulted in everyone on board and many others who were working in the buildings to die. Both buildings collapsed within two hours, destroying nearby buildings also. Many people jumped out of the building and 2,973 people died that day.
The United States reacted to the attacks by launching a War On Terrorism, invading Afghanistan. They mainly invaded Afghanistan to get rid of the Taliban, a group that governed the country, and a goal of bringing Osama bin Laden and al-Qeada to justice and preventing other terrorist groups from forming. When the FBI was searching for clues on the plane about who the attackers were they found Mohamed Atta's luggage. (Mohamed Atta was one of the pilots on one of the planes who had died.) In his luggage they found papers that contained the identities of all 19 hijackers, their motives, and their backgrounds. Clues later pointed that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed presented the whole plan of attacking the Twin Towers to Osama bin Laden, the founding leader of the terrorist organization al-Qaeda, in 1996. In late 1988 bin Laden gave Mohammed permission to continue planning the mission and they both continued meeting with eachother to figure out their history making plan.
Many civilians from New York helped recover bodies from the buildings which was very heartbreaking for tons of people. Airports were closed down which left many people from around the world stranded. Even late night show hosts took time off from this accident. This incident was almost the biggest situation of the U.S. Global War on Terrorism. President Bush's job ratings went up a lot after the attack.
I feel that this tragedy has effected the lives of many people and it is definitley one of the worst things that has happend in our country. This event has torn many families apart and has left people wondering about what would have happened if this hadn't occured. It has for surely given people a different perspective on life.
